SpidersEye's 52 - Week 8 - Mechanical

Lovely shot indeed Kay, I'm gonna go with Jean here, I think I prefer the colour. A really good idea.

A lovely shot that still fits the theme. I really like the colour version, as the b/w loses quite a lot of detail in the foreground. However an IR style might work really well. Do you have a channel mixer in PSP? You could experiment by having 100% green, quite a lot of red and low, perhaps minus blue - don't worry about making it all add up to 00%

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. PSP does have a channel mixer and I think I will have a look at it - you can tell I don't really do much processing can't you? It''s something I should try and get to grips with I think.

Thanks very much, it's appreciated :)

Hi I love your people shot, its people but not...good idea .

Thankyou for commenting, I'm pleased you like it :)

I've been having a bit of a play with the People picture to improve on the colours a little and come up with this ... is it any better? I'm not sure ....

Some cracking shots.... I really like Street and Present makes me want to visit Scotland! Very nice shot the B&W works well(although I love the tones in the stonework of the colour), would be great to get back there when the weather is moodier.....

Thanks Sonia :)

While I'm not going to complain about the bright sunny skies we had all weekend, it would've been much more atmospheric with some decent clouds! :)

Week 8 - Mechanical

I had a few ideas for this theme. Firstly, I have quite a few friends who are car mechanics so it would've been easy to go and have a word and shoot something they happened to have lying around. The second idea I had involved a trip out to a nearby tourist attraction, which I was hoping to do today but a few things cropped up that resulted in me staying at home.

The picture I've taken for this week is not what I had in mind (as I want to challenge myself a bit in this project I went off the idea of visiting any mechanics I know) but it is part of a car that I happened to have lying around:

Things I learnt this week:
- It's good to have more than one idea incase something prevents you getting the shot you want
- Autosol is great stuff for cleaning up bits of steel
- Torches are great for additional lighting if you don't own a flash

Thanks for looking, all comments welcome :)

Kay.

It doesn't jump out and say mechanical for me. In fact at first glance it says bent paper clip shaped as a crab (I have no idea what it is!). Your lighting, background and (I think) reflection look good, it's just not doing much for me as a subject. Sorry.

No need to say sorry! I know it isn't obviously mechanical - I didn't want it to be :D

Thanks for commenting :)

I like the shot in general, the lighting is nice and subtle and the reflection works really well.

Doesnt shout out mechanical but dont suppose it needs to when we all know what it is.

Well done.

I do like the reflection and lighting - very nice setup

Thanks Nick. I find my laptop is great for using as a reflective black background. Thanks for commenting :)

Thanks very much, glad you like the lighting too as there's nothing really technical about it!

I didn't really want it to be an obvious take on the theme (in fact that's what I'll be aiming for most weeks unless I leave it till the last minute).

If you were wondering what it is, it's a retaining clip off a brake calliper (not the set that's on the car though!) I probably have enough mechanical knowledge to fit them myself but I'm going to leave it to the mechanics I think! :)

As others have said, it doesn't shout mechanical. However it's a well taken shot and it's very well lit if you used torches.

I like the composition and the lines are pleasing to the eye.

Love the image, it's really well done, it doesn't shout mechanical though. It does fit the theme, taking into account what it is, an interesting and different interpretation.

I really like the reflections and lighting on this. What is it a set of bull bars?

Oh, nevermind.

interesting interpretation of the theme.. like the lines and reflections

'A retaining clip off a brake calliper' sounds technical enough to me to count as 'Mechanical', Kay, and as a piece of artwork, it's cool. :)

Your lappy gives a lovely subtle reflection and I could see this in a modern, minimalist art exhibition. :):):)

btw, I much preferred your first two People shots, but it's great to try different processing techniques, so  for experimenting. :)

Thanks Ian, I'm glad the lighting and composition work for you :)

Thanks John, I didn't want it to shout mechanical really. I was after something a bit different. Really pleased you like it! :)

Thanks Michelle, much appreciated :)

Thankyou Jean, glad you like the picture.

I think I need a bit of practice with processing, I don't play with it often enough and it took me ages to come up with that last people shot. Thanks for commenting :)

Catch up time for me Kay.
I was positive that I'd commented on people, but clearly I hadn't

I absolutely love the idea of "people with no People" - and it really does fit the theme.
I prefer the colour version, but agree that it could do with some sort of tweak - but for me the edited version isn't it. The colours just don't look right in that version.

I'm not sure that I'd like to see the full IR treatment on it, but if you have curves adjustments in PSP I'd be tempted to have a play with those - independently for the blue and green channels to see if you can give the sky and grass some more oomph.

Mechanical : No idea what it is (retaining clip off a brake calliper means nothing to me) but I like it a lot.
I've got a soft spot for reflective black backgrounds and you've pulled this off beautifully. Nice simple composition - but very effective.

Hi Sarah, thanks for the comments :)

I agree about the colours in the People edit. As I've said I don't do alot of PP so it's all new to me but I'm going to keep having attempts at it. I'm glad you like the idea though :)

Thanks for the comments about the Mechanical shot too: I actualy wasn't sure if people would like it or not so I'm glad it works for you.

My shot for 'Play' is probably going to be late: I will be moving house this weekend so I doubt I'll have time to get the picture I want (though I'm sure I'll want a break at some point so I'll do my best!)

Kay.

My shot for week 9 will be late ... I've had a chaotic weekend, and hardly had time to think about photography at all! I'll aim to get my picture this week, along with week 10, and maybe even 'Chopped' because I still haven't done that either!
