Hey Guys,

I am planning on going to Speedway for my first time tonight, at Lakeside - to watch Lakeside Hammers.

Does anyone know the rules regarding photography in speedway? I will not be selling the photos just using them to gain experience.

If the answer is yes, I can take photographs, then does anyone have any speedway tips?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

When I've been to Highbridge to see Somerset there have been people in the crowd with DSLRs and big lenses, they had no problems. Haven't taken my camera though, I just go to watch.

Once you've taken your shot turn round immediately and duck! You'll find out why and Good Luck!

Good advice ... and don't attempt to change a lens when there.

I've taken a few shots at Glasgow Tigers and had no prob shooting.
A few pro togs were in centre of track shooting and everyone else was left to shoot whatever took their fancy.

Can I ask why I have to duck? Lol, sounds rather scary ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone I will give it a go tonight and report back!

I've been to Rye House and like has been said above, the pro's seemed to be in the middle but plenty of other folks were using DSLR's from the side of the track. The dirt really will be flying everywhere!

It's a great sport, really exciting. Good luck with it, would love to see some shots afterwards.

When the bikes pass, there's the possibility, depending where you shoot from and how close you're prepared to get, that you'll be pelted with hundreds of small pieces of grit and a cloud of dust if the track's dry.

Shale. Depends on the venue and where you stand. I remember in my youth at Poole Pirates getting absolutely pelted at the entrance to the first turn!

Ah right! I will give it a go tonight then! All this shooting and turning is gonna make me dizzy; but hopefully I will have some good shots from it ;) lol.

I got to the speedway place, and got told that meeting had been cancelled, due to international trials or something.

Ill try again at the next meeting in a fortnight! :)

Just saw this thread!

if its your first time going your absoloutley going to love it!

Outside of the track your going to need a lens with a focal length of atleast 200mm in my experience.

Keep the shutter high but not to high that subjects look static, also try panning the bikes down the straight, can yield some excellent results

When the light drops up the ISO, because a noisy image is better than a Blurry one!

Try different angles from all over the track and just have fun :)

Ohh and whatever you do don't use flash ! it's very frowned upon :D Tape it down if you have to !

Regards, Lee

P.s - If you take a look on my flickr, there's a few shots there, i am by no means good :D but it might give you a flavour, hope it helps

Your shots look really good mate! Hopefully I can get some shots like that next week! :)

Give the club a call, most clubs arent so strict and im sure they will let you shoot from the middle for a match.
Worth a try....
Ive been photographing speedway for 15years and love it!

As said above above.Don't use flash. If you do,expect a dogging over the tannoy and then to be escorted off the premesis(seen it done).
My local try to ban all photography.I wasn't there but apparently a guy stopped at the 1st corner a few weeks ago thinking there was a red flag when it was actually the red beam off someones flash coming into play for af help.To say they weren't happy would be an understatement.
Cheers
Gary

Correct, dont ever use flash ( it wont reach anyway)
But i cant understand why clubs would ban it

Change of plan, I'm now going to the match against Eastbourne tonight! Will post my results when I get back! :)
