As per the title, anybody use one of these?

The reviews on the web are great?

I have 1 600 RT and was thinking about a 2nd and the ST-E3 to save messing about with triggers etc..

Not a cheap solution but maybe easier to use for a newb ?

Anybody got any thoughts?

Cheers

I have 3x600rt and the st-e3. By far and away the best solution for wireless flash. There are some videos on the Canon USA site by Bruce Dorn which show the system off very well.

I watched a Creative Live session with someone using this system, and it looked fantastic.

Personally I think it's a lot of money to pay for the convenience, expecially as you'll end up using Manual flash power because ETTL can be a bit too twitchy for off camera use.

The alternative is probably going with the 622c which appears to be pretty decent...

Canon's RT system is certainly very neat, but still doesn't include remote second-curtain sync like third-party manufacturers do, and for a fraction of the cost. Also Pocket Wizard's Mini/Flex system offers several other real performance enhancements (enhanced second-curtain sync, optimised HSS, and Tail and Peak Hypersync).

As mentioned above, manual is usually the preferred mode for a lot of remote flash photography.

Thanks Richard, it looks like there are some interesting kits out there from pocketwizard.

This is all new to me so better do some more investigating...

622 v pocket wizard etc...

PW's are great, and those performance tweaks they give can be a real benefit - if you need them. Action, basically.

But otherwise they're a bit clunky and cumbersome with the AC3 zone controller on top, v handy though it is. And there are still some occasionally irritating range/RF interference issues with Canon guns.

YN 622 is simply unbeatable value and works great. Phottix Odins are very nice, rear screen is dead easy to use, but no flash on-camera and no AF assist beam.

What are the RF issues with the ST-E3 and 600EX-RT's Richard?

I used a couple of the 600's and the ST-E3 at the weekend and they performed flawlessly.

The only negative I have with the setup is that the ST-E3 does not have the AF assist like the older ST-E2 did. This is why I'm looking for a third 600. Especially for the first dance when the Dj turns the lighting down ....Doh !

RF problem only applies to PW and certain model Canon guns, cutting range. Lots about it on the PW website, and some good comparison tests on RobGalbraith.com.

UK frequencies are said to be less affected and there are ways around it with screening or internal gun mods. More of an irritation than a deal breaker, but it's certainly a factor. IMHO, PW should have abandoned their old frequencies and gone for 2.4 like everyone else these days, but they wanted reverse-compatibility.

My apologies, I thought you were referring to the newer 600's.

A few more features of the ST-E3.

1. The flashes report to the ST-E3 when they have finished recycling and the little lightning bolt appears in the viewfinder.

2. Pressing the depth of field preview button turns all the flashes on for a few seconds so that you can see where the light is falling. (It actually strobes very quickly rather than being continuous)

3. It has a new group mode which allows the independent control of up to 5 groups.

just some more things to think about.

Regards...
