Im after a flashgun but reading up getting confused on what and how 3rd party flashguns compare to Canons speedlite series. Can anyone help?

I would want it to be fully automatic but also have the control of manual when needed.
Do the 3rd party ones automatically zoom when you zoom the lens as some places I've read say they do and some don't?
Are the 3rd party ones capable for rear sync and high speed sync etc like the speedlites?

I was looking at the jessops 360AFD, would this be any good? how does it compare feature wise to the Canon 430?
 
I've been using Metz 44 speedlites for a while a now. They do everything that the Canons do and the only real difference is getting used to the menu system and a slightly lower build quality.

From the look of the Jessops flash it won't do high speed sync and it isn't clear if it's compatible with Canon's wireless flash system.

I've found with most flashguns the more you pay the more control you'll have and features you'll get. If you want something to put on your camera that flashes most TTL flashguns will be more than adequate.
 
Cheaper third party guns will do usually do second-curtain sync, which is technically easy, but not high-speed sync, which isn't. And some of them that say they do, have limited control.

Metz are about the best third-party for matching Canon's specs. Don't want to worry you but there are also some quirks with the 60D and some third-party guns - sometimes! Buying Canon is the only 100% way, now and in the future, but many people get along just fine with Nissin/Metz.
