Is this a decent enough flash for general use. I always try to avoid flash where possible but would this do the job well enough for the few shots I need a flash for, or are the higher models far better?

I think the 270 is really meant more for the likes of the G10, if it was me I'd be spending a bit more and going for a 430EX/II

Worth the £100 more you think?

My prices are from Jessops.

I have a 220ex which i bought for my compact SX1is , tried it on my 40d and its not much better than the inbuilt flash . Spend the extra its well worth it.

Well I think it's a great little gun, provided you don't want to do anything with it but pretty basic on-camera auto flash, with a bit of bounce. I can well imagine that will satisfy a heck of a lot of people

It's small, light, cheap, fully auto E-TTL and has enough power for most things, provided you don't want to bounce it off the clouds.

Compared to the on-board flash, it is two stops more powerful (which is a lot), sits higher for better lighting, and of course you can bounce it. Stick something like this Jessops diffuser on it for a fiver and you've got the StoFen look verging on Fongism, or try a DIY bounce card. This glorified handkerchief from Jessops gives great light: http://www.jessops.com/online.store...sops/Universal Flash Diffuser-50441/Show.html

If you try bounce flash in big rooms, you will either run out of power or be forced to push the ISO higher than you'd like; if you try to shoot hundreds of pictures at a time, you will run out of batteries; and if you have strobist multi-flash ambitions, you will be disappointed. Look at the 430EX/II (£70 more).

But for most normal stuff, go for it
