Speedlight trigger advice needed

I have a mobile static lighting system that I have been using for some 20 or so years (a 2 x 500W Tungsten bulb system). I say mobile but it still has to be lugged about in a pretty big box.

I now have a Nikon D7000 which I have been using for the last year and I'm in a position to buy a flashgun for it. I would like to buy two SB-700 units and then link them off-camera with a wireless trigger for some basic studio flash work.

I would like some advice on which system would let me link it all up. I'm looking for a system that ideally has two telecopic stands that I can fix my reflective and shoot-through umbrellas on, as well as the flash units.

The purpose is so I can cover a range of subjects with this system and still use the flash units on camera singularly or as interactively and mbile as possible.

I'm in the UK so any systems would need to be available here. I will, at some point in the future and when space permits, buy some larger updated studio flash but at the moment I want to concentrate on using the speedlights as that will be the most adaptable for me at this time.

Thanks
Richard

Doesn't the D7000 have the Nikon flash commander built in to fire external speedlights ?

With regards to the stands and umbrellas, there's a load of different makes with a price point for most pockets.

If the body doesn't allow the flashes to trigger, get a cheap set of 603's from ebay, you'll have to adjust the flash power manually as you'll have no electronic control from the camera but it's cheap as chips.

Hi Brian

I've not seen anything about wireless control in the manual but I'm double checking it now.

If it does then great, half the battle solved! Although does that mean the speedlights just go on the stand with no interaction through the hotshoe when off-camera?

Thanks for your other comments. Can you recommend any good stands that have umbrella fixings?

Brian - just found it! Yes the body does have the commander mode (although I was looking under flash rather than the word commander which is where the confusion was!).

So it's just stands I'm looking for now.

Thanks

Yes the flashes will sit atop their stands and fire (as long as they're tuned on to the correct setting) without cable connections to the camera if you get some triggers or if the d7000 can act as a flash commander. .... I use a canon body, so can't vouch for the nikon kit.

With regards to the stands, you have loads of choice on ebay or in the online shops such as Warehouse express, Calumet and the likes.

I use my flashes on Calumet umbrella adaptors, I got mine on special offer. I also use an interfit XS speedlight bracket as it allows me to use S Type fitting accessories. i.e softboxes and my Beauty dish with the flash as well as with my studio heads. click here

The D7000 can act as a CLS commander so if you're using SB700s with it and will be working indoors then you don't really need a set of triggers.....

This is one of the big advantages of the D90 and D7000 over the "entry" models.

There are a number of youtube videos if search "nikon creative lighting" these give you the basic settings and how to use it.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I've looked at some of the places to buy them and the flashes have stands included so it looks like the SB-700's.

Thanks again :)
