speedlight softbox

How cheap are you looking for?

How well do those work, considering the relatively low power of a speedlight.

That was going to be my next question. Up to now I have been using shoot thru umbrellas when on location with my speedlights and they are okay so I am not even sure if a softbox will give me anything extra. Anyone??
 
In theory less light spillage, but I have no experience so cannot say..

You have more control of the light as its more contained. I use shoot thru umbrellas and softboxes and brollies work fine a lot of the time for me but sometimes the light that gets bounced around when indoors can be an issue. If I want the light to fall off quicker and focus more on my subjects without lighting up the environment so much, the smallish softboxes do the trick nicely.

You also avoid lens flare from the light out the back of the brolly too. Outdoors if in the open its not so much of an issue for me, and I can just feather the light a bit by pointing the brolly over their head a bit. But I still don't get the same look as a softbox exactly.

So, in your opinion, worth adding a 24" softbox to the kit for non studio shoots? 36 quid isn't too bad and it would mean I don't have to cart one of my big strobes around with me.

I think it is. The speedlight ones are usally pretty easy and quick to set up and the stands you use for brollies will hold them no problem. I can't comment on the one in the link though, I haven't had any experience with it.

The ones I like are double diffused like the ones from lastolite. It has an extra removable baffle inside.
