Ok ive got a 40Mb line, with my xbox connected to it with a cable it runs around 35Mb which is fine, however i want to move the xbox somewhere too far from the router to be wired and in wireless mode the speed drops down to 3 or 4Mb wth intermittent drop outs, which sucks. is there anything i can do to speed up the connection? this is on a sky router. Not sure the make but it will be a new model i guess as i only got it last week.

how far are you from the router?
look at using the powerline plugs or a wireless extender to boost the signal.

Ok thanks. I will look into those plugs.

Is "too far to be wired" beyond what Ethernet cable you can buy at Maplins or does it mean "I can't be arsed to wire it in". You can get 20+m Ethernet cable for almost tuppence these days....

Yeah just go on the online chat and ask. I did and they sent one straight out. Play dumb and say you heard you can get a free WiFi extender

ok :) i didnt really want miles of cable running between rooms but that might work too

I have an upstairs office and had the same issues in the end I ran a few cables under the floor boards etc and up the stair cavity from the ground floor, it takes some doing and fiddling but can be the best solution.

Do home plugs or an extender add appreciable ping / delay to the Xbox which may cause other problems in online gaming?
Nope. I have TP-Link 500Mbps homeplugs connecting my computer (upstairs) to the router (downstairs) and there's no ping penalty. I play super-quick twitch games like Titanfall and Crysis 3, so if anyone would notice, it'd be me :)

It really is the best solution - particularly if you have gigabit switches at either end (or are direct into the computer/appliance). Whilst I have a few homeplugs, they are to distribute to rooms that don't have huge bandwidth requirements (streaming from the home server) and are the rooms I was too stingy to wire when the house was built (false economy!)

homeplugs are good, only limititation is when you try to copy a lot of data up and down and then you realize the top speed is a bit low

Thanks, answered a question for me :)
