Ok i got a letter through the post today saying that i was speeding in a 30mph zone, ok fair enough. However the letter says that there is photographic evidence. Now i know with complete certainty that there are no yellow box cameras along the stretch of road that the letter says i was caught in and there are no road grid lines to be seen either.

While i accept that they wouldnt randomly send out letter to drivers in the area claiming i was speeding and im pretty sure i was anyway (over 30 but under 40) would i have a leg to stand on by asking for this photographic evidence knowing that they don't have it and if they dont have any could i use that as reason not to cough up. Although im not sure how they monitor speed along there tbh! So they could be using a go pro strapped to a lampost i guess.

Mobile camera vans take video. It's probably a question best asked on the Pepipoo forum than on here. They do a lot of these types of questions.

A) Make sure the payment method is kosher and its not a con anyway.. anyone can make a letter look good... the fact they say there is photo evidence without showing you (they do with parking) then it smells a bit

B) If happy the letter is genuine then yeagh i would dispute it and ask to see the evidence.... your not doing anythign wrong by asking

A few years ago - clean licence now - I was caught on the A14 by the Suffolk Police using their mobile cameras. They sent out the necessary letter to confirm the ID of the driver but also sent a link so that I could view the picture online.
Needless to say I had to plead guilty and pay the fine because yours truly was well pictured driving the car along with the vehicle registration number.

With mobile camera systems the powers that be do not need grid lines, yellow speed boxes or anything else for that matter. You are seen approaching the detection area, the photograph is taken once you are in it and your speed recorded.
If the speed you are driving at is in excess of the "allowable" limit then you will get paperwork.

I notice that you do not say where this paperwork has come from. Is it from a police force or a private entity?

Can't hurt to ask to see the evidence but rather silly to admit guilt on a public forum...

I got a letter from north yorkshire police saying i had exceeded the speed limit (caught by a mobile camera trap) on the A59 between A&B on said date, doing 68mph in a 60mph zone.
The first course of action was asking if i was the owner of vehicle reg xyz.
I had a few days to reply before further action was taken.
Once i had replied confirming being the owner i got a further letter about two weeks later offering me the chance to pay £80 and attend a speeding awareness course.
That is my experience to share with you.

Is this the recent scam from Greater Manchester Police?

by all meansmake sure it is real by calling someone up and ask for pics.

I've also heard about the GMP scam .

Are you in their area ?

I suspect you are within your rights to ask for sight of the evidence

This is in Herts and the letter is legit as I've had one a year or so back and it's all the same thing. Didn't think about the mobile detectors though so it's probably that. It would be interesting to see a picture though just to find out where the camera was.

There was nothing in there though that offered or told you how to obtain the evidence which is a little annoying. Just the usual request for licence number and confirmation Im the owner

Strange, because the last time I got one, there was a web page to check for "photographic evidence"
Lucky I did TBH, it wasn't my car, sure it was the same make & model, BUT a totally different colour, and over 200 miles away from where I'd been that day,
And I could prove it too :)

Also, there is the possibility of a `clone` car.

No it probably was me, I'm not saying how dare they, I'm sure I was going over 30 and deserve a fine. I'm just wondering if they have put a loophole in their standard letter templates by claiming photographic evidence when there isn't any.

It's not a loophole.
Ask and ye shall receive. :-)

You can ask for photographic evidence but they have no obligation to show you what evidence they have until you plead not guilty and are delivered the evidence pack before attending court.

The experts at Pepipoo always advise you request any photographs "in order to help identify the driver" as most Forces will comply, asking to see the photographic evidence can be refused at the nip stage.

just fess up and take the hit and slow down,
if you were doing 85 on the motorway i would say you are just a dick but 30mph zones are there for a reason.
