Hello all,

Merry Christmas!

I'm having trouble with my canon 430 speed light.... i got a Elemental kit for Christmas and i was trying to sync my speed light with the strobe lights...

i have the 430 set to slave.. its on the same channels as the strobes ( channel 1 ) but it doesn't want to flash?

Is it even possible??

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question I'm a serious noob :D

Thanks James

caon speedlights don't have optical slaves in them, you need to fire it with a radiotrigger or somesuch

I use mine with a radio trigger and slave the studio heads to it ;)

Aye, I do similar :)

set all the lights up how I want them, then depending what I'm doing I will either run a sync cable from camera to my 580ex, or trigger it via radio trigger. When the hotshoe flash fires, it will also trigger the studio strobes via the optical slaves. I think that makes sense :D

same but I use a 430exII :D

can i ask how you set that up??

The slave function of the 430EX only works with Canon E-TTL auto flash.

Since you don't have a sync socket on the 430, to do what Rob is suggesting with a cable you would need a hot-shoe adapter for a tenner, eg this http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/16886/show.html Then use the sync cable that you should have got with the Elementals.

This will fire the 430 and this in trun will trigger the optical slaves which I guess the Elementals have built-in, so long as they can get a decent look at the 430's flash.

Rather better is to use a Yongnuo RF-602 radio transmiter/receiver set to fire the 430. £28 from here post #2 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807 then the Elementals will fire in the same way as with cable.

Use a shutter speed no faster than 1/160sec with radio triggers - they usually introduce a very slight delay compared to optical triggers.
