I'm very new to OCF so need your advice! I have Yongnuo rf603 triggers and a Nissin di466. The Nissin won't 'talk' to the triggers so need advice on a cheap speed light. I have been using the speed light with the pop up flash on low power in the meantime. Thx in advance

You can only shoot in manual mode with the 603. You haven't got it in TTL mode have you ?

No manual. It only fires wireless in slave.

I was trying to avoid cables though.

Put the camera into manual mode, remember to choose a shutter speed below your sync speed which could be 200th, so try it on shutter speed of 160th, put one trigger on top of camera and slide other onto flash gun foot, then try

You just put it on Manual. Not in slave mode, so it thinks it's on a camera. Then the trigger will fire it exactly as the camera hotshoe would.

It won't fire in manual. That's how I realised there was a problem. The triggers work fine. The channels are fine. I've tried various options. Then I spoke to someone who found out that the Nissin di466's central pin isn't 'hot' therefore won't work wirelessly. That's why I'm looking recommendations for a cheap speedlight

Ah, you mean the di466 is a TTL-only gun, and doesn't have a manual option, therefore won't respond to the manual-only triggers - and no way of controlling the power even if it did.

In which case, the flash gun you want is probably a Yongnuo. There are numerous models, some with confusingly similar names that I lost track of a while ago, but the 460 is a basic manual gun for only £25 http://www.amazon.co.uk/YN-460-Speedlite-Olympus-Pentax-Camera/dp/B009WPKB4E/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1403396024&sr=1-11&keywords=yongnuo flash Might be worth spending a bit more to get some extra functions and more power.

I think that's what Sir SR was suggesting. Only just got checking. There's no ports at all

Another thought: if I get one of the Yongnuo range, would the Nissin flash work in slave to the Yongnuo? Thx

Thanks Phil! Have you any opinions on a cheap n cheerful one?

Richard suggested the 460, I think the mk3 will trigger direct from the rf603.

The Nissin you have is a bit useless for multi flash set ups, unless you are using the Canon near IR system.

Get some yongnuo 622's TTL triggers as another option .

I wouldn't say 100% without actually trying things. Not sure exactly what's possible with that gun and mixing and matching is known to be a quirky business.

However, I think the Nissin should work in either auto-TTL or manual with say the YN 622 triggers. That's worth looking into and not expensive, greatly extending versatility and leaving all options open for the future. Maybe buy from Amazon and send them back if it doesn't work... ;)

Or get another cheap gun that will work with 603s. The 466 has basic remote optical slave feature, S1 and S2 modes etc, so it will fire off another flash. Not sure how power is then set but there must be a way.

Thanks Phil, John and Richard. That's a few avenues to explore. Much appreciated. I don't want to make another mistake buying! Julie

Just thinking about this some more, the YN 622 triggers will fire the Nissin 466 flash I'm fairly sure, but you may not get full functionality, depending on both the gun and the camera. Safe route is to get another gun to suit the 603 triggers, then you should certainly be able to slave the Nissin off that as an extra light.

That's just brilliant! I wondered whether I'd be able to use the Nissin as a separate light.

I think I'll buy the Yongnuo 560 Mark 111. I'll be able to use the triggers with it.

Once I'm happy with OCF I'll probably invert in the Lencarta system. I tried it at a workshop during the week and it was the biz.

Thank you all
Julie
