Spectrum World press photo awards

I've edited the title as there are some very graphic images in there.

Bloody Hell! I was bored until 21. Then stunned!

Kev.

There's some "different" stuff in there I will say...

Had to admit though I was a little dissapointed with some of those photos - not what I'd have really called top notch photos - that American news website (that people sometimes post a link to on here) always has stunning photos, these are a little poor by comparison.

Must say though, the thread title made me imagine I was going to see some Sinclair revival magazine doing a photo awards:

LOL, I thought someone had just photoshopped the man in, last few images are quite disturbing though.

I can understand the reportage shots and the greenpeace shot etc, but why does a naked man doing press ups deserve an award ??? or am I missing some wonderful point ?

Maybe edit the first post to say exactly what the pictures are. We don't know whether we want to see graphic images without knowing what they are.

I'm shocked the soldier survived with 40% of his brain missing.

Some very strong images in there.

Jose Bagley (the guy with half his head missing) has featured in a lot of papers and magazines as well as the Sunday Times.

Those last ones of the stoning have scared me ****less.

That is horrific.
It is in the genre of reportage photojournalism that we have nearly lost to our subservience to purse-lipped, 'I'm offended', new puritan dross.

This image featured as a cover-shot for Life magazine during WW2 - can you imagine a similar photo of a Taleban head mounted on a British armoured vehicle in Afghanistan being used today?

We've changed...people seem to think that just because 'our' life is all soft and cuddly that it's the same everywhere...

I seem to remember that Japanese skulls were a favourite momento of the USMC from back then... I *think* they've stopped doing that now... if they haven't then the Japanese will be complaining :D

with regards the stoning if these people belive in what they do how come they cover there faces

Remember even Himmler was *physically* disgusted at what they were doing. Doesn't mean they don't/didn't want to carry out the act, just that the physical aspects made them loose their dinner.

Wasnt their also a trend of stealing gold fillings from the skulls?

Oh all sorts went on... thats what you get when you regard your enemy as less than human... same with the folks in these photos - they don't believe their victim to be the same as them.

It's a political protest - and a cynical dig at Chinese state censorship.

you'd be arrested here for doing naked press ups in a city centre. unless someone told me what those photos were ment to mean I'd think they are just crap. in fact even now you've told me what they are suppose to represent I still think they are crap

hemispherectomy is removal or disabling one side of the brain although there are complications. most commonaly carried on children because their brains display more neuroplasticity.

Are you not aware of the work of Spencer Tunick?

You are in for a surprise.

You know that does say quite a lot about you as well, don't you?

its interesting that the images of the stoning have now been removed - there now remains only the one before shot

Mr Tunick did a naked shoot in a pub along from my old work which was indoors. Also his work is not press photography and is not that interesting other than haing lots of naked people in them.

it says nothing about me, I don't look for meaning in photographs or other forms of art. I either like it or I don't.

Anyone else not impressed by the overall winner? It's the one of Iranian women on a roof - I just don't really get anything from it.

I don't think it stands on its own - but in context of that story its very powerful

Imo a good photo should stand on it's own though.

I don't really get the 'England at Play' series on there either - some of them just look like very average snaps to me.

There's some amazing ones in there though - really like some of the South Georgia ones by Paul Nicklen.
