Windows 64 bit probably home premium

Thinking about AMD system this time

so mobo Asus Sabertooth 990FX AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+)

CPU FX8 8120
16Gb Ram

Budget around £650- £700

Graphics card DX11 and able to run BF3

Thoughts on a cookie please.

I should add I am not asking you to do the legwork. I already have a spec, just want to see if anyone can do better :)

AMD is not recommended at the moment. It is inferior to Sandybridge.

i5-2500k (see it against the 8150 which is faster than the 8120 here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/434?vs=288)
P67/X68 based board and overclock the i5 to ~4.5GHz.
8G will do, 16G if you have the money

Graphics card - dunno...

I would disagree about AMD.

Ive always gone AMD over Intel

I used to go AMD over Intel until Intel provided better performance and lower power. The smart money has been on Intel for quite a few generations now (and I speak as an owner and current user of both).

I was amd person but went for Intel...
I had Phenom 2. When new motherboards started coming out with am3+ ready for bulldozer I bought one...then bulldozer was announced...and it was a failure!
Luckily, I managed to find person that bought my system and I could afford to go for Intel i7 :)

Leave bulldozer for now...if you need new system now, get i5 ori7 ...only reasonable way

on scan there is i7 bundle on sale now for around £420 if I remember good...8gb ram not 16. I think that's made from components I bought as well.

That leaves around £200 for gpu which is enough. I'm running on 6950 and bf3 never had lags

amd currently run slower and hotter than the sandybridge intel range.

id agree the i5-2500k is the route to go down, a very good chip for the cash and mostly the same performance as the i7-2600k.

Righto

Going for the following.

Intel i5 2500K Processor - Overclocked to 4.40GHz
Blue LED Quiet Heatpipe Cooler
GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM.
750W OCZ ZT Series 80PLUS Bronze Modular Power Supply
MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Running Win7 HP 64 bit on a 1.5Tb HDD

sitting in a

Silverstone SST-RV03B-WA Black Full Tower Windowed Chassis w/ USB3.0

Should have the parts next week sometime

The case is a bit unusual. The mobo is rotated 90 degrees so theI/O panel is at the top under an enclosure.

This means the GFX card is vertical in the system allowing free air to rise. Interesting location for the extraHDD and psu as well.

Interesting case. System spec seems fine ;)

PSU is a bit overkill for this spec unless you plan to get better gpu in not long future

2nd gfx card will be fitted at some point.

Will also be running a total 5-6 sata drives.

I have always gone for a psu with more than I need. You never know when you might:)

Why does having an i5 lose you the ability to overclock with 16G memory?

Ahh... you're getting someone else to do the overclocking.... Just put another 8G in then ;)

So which I7 do you have?

Also apart from boot time any real benefit to boot drive being SSD?

Does win7 detect and install drivers if bios amended to AHCI?

Seen plenty of people with issues installing win7 to SSD.

I never even had to change anything in the BIOS.
In fact, the first I heard of AHCI was in here.

It was all done, as if by magic, mind you that was maybe down to the ASUS board as well as Win7.

I did run Windows experience though, that is supposed to set everything up.

Changing the bios setting won't require a driver change in w7

Had no bother with my Ocz vertex personally, first attempt it went on. Shouldn't be any more hassle than a normal drive.

Ta

My recent board was set to AHCI out of the box.
