Yes
In the manual it says to use the battery immediatly after charging.

To me this is not always practical and kinda pointless if the point in having a spare battery is that you use it when you need it. Therefor my question is on the grounds that not using the charged battery immediatly damages it, am I better off buying a non Nikon batteryat £25 or £70 for an original?

Don't worry about it too much, it's just that batteries lose their charge once they've stopped charging... but a few days or whatever, particularly for the type of battery that cameras use, it's not an issue.

But yes, it is well worth getting some £7 or so 3rd party batteries...

I used the 7 day shop for batteries to use in my D300 and they work fine.

Got 2 Phottix batteries for £15 on ebay (delivered) and seem spot on. Needed them for when I am away and have no electric for 2 weeks. Going to order another 2 this week.

I charge batteries both genuine nikons and 3rd party ones and use a week or so later with no problems, to answer your post.

Bought 3 batteries from 7dayshop for my D300S - seem fine and report well on the charger.

Have you tried the 3rd party batteries in the 300s? When Nikon introduce new models you can sometimes find that the 3rd party batteries currently on the market don't work in them - I've got a pile left from my D80 days that wouldn't work in the D300.

Hi,

At the moment I have one in the battery grip and the other directly in the camera - so far they seem fine. The battery info guage displays power left and 'lifetime' of the batteries quite well but I guess time will tell.

Also obtained two 4a's for the D3 and again the battery charger seems to respond well but never used them in the D3 as yet.
