weekly Spacester's 2013 52 thread: Week 8 - "Time"

Well here is my first ever 52.

Week 1, 2013.

Definitely some sin in there. I thought about doing something clever with the other meanings of the word, but in the end defaulted to playing with lego. Probsbly some room for improvement here, but it was fun playing with lego, and no my son didn't take part in building it :-)

No MBP today, as it is being updated, so this was done exclusively on the iPad - I am quite liking my new SD card reader, but missing the power of Aperture and PS!

LMAO, took me a second to see it...but when I did LOL.

Nice colours and I'd just like to see it all in focus because there is no real focus point...it's all rude :)

Good start.
 
Very funny it looks like a lego Hieronymus Bosch bit more DoF might have been better a nice start :clap:
 
I think I might have another go tonight, with tripod so I can up the exposure time, decrease aperture and lower the iso. Problem with handheld was in this low light, needed high iso to get the shutter speed fast enough (I shot at f8, but couldn't get any more). The ipad noise reduction app made the image fuzzy :-(

It'll have to be redone in tungsten light tonight, but that should be correctable with changing white balance. I will have my MBP back agin this evening, so access to proper PP :-)

This one complete with phallic idol.... F22 on a tripod iso 400,, everything still not perfectly in focus.

That's me done - I am sure I could do a lot better than this if I spent the whole evening on it, but I want to play with some macro work this evening using my new tripod!

PP still done on iPad :-(
 
Very entertaining, and that white guy up against the tree seems to realyl be enjoying himself!

Love how lego can be so creative, great start for week one, and looking forward to the other 52

Hi Alan, clever, fun take on the theme!

I like the composition, colour and DoF of the second one best.

Good work :)
 
certainly on theme and great imagination, yes the first one was a little soft in that it was hard to determine a single point of focus and there were one or two highlights, the second and third shots are better (in particular the second) but too much of a colour cast for my liking due to the lighting.

For me, the second one's the winner :-)

Thanks - you are right, lighting was poor. Not much I could have done about it though, as I don't own a flash (other than on-board) and the shots were taken in the evening, under multiple tungsten lights on in the lounge :-) I really need a studio!

These photos have given me some inspiration.... Heading out to London tomorrow with a bag full of toys, two cameras and a 7 year old, to see what we can find.....
 
Lego can always be fun to use and you have made the best of the theme with these, the thead almost needs NSFW tag. :thumbs:

Nah you dont :-)

I started out with 2 x £4.99 desk lights, you know the ones that are on a flexible neck?

Then a roll of white wallpaper for background and moving the lights nearer or farther away and the use of kitchen roll as a diffuser pegged on the edge of the lights as necessary :-)

So that's what goes on after the kids have gone to bed . . . I had no idea that those sweet little Lego people were so naughty!

The white balance looks far better on the 2nd set and in terms of angle and composition I think you've got it right on those ones too.
Shot no.2 is the one that works best for me, although I do love the pole dancing policeman in no.3 :lol:

They do all look slightly soft to me though.
Not sure if that's insufficient sharpening on resizing, a result of running noise reduction, a slight bit of tripod wobble on the 2nd set . . . or some combination of all three.
It doesn't detract from a great set of fun creative pics, but maybe something to watch out for with future subject matter where it might be more integral to the final image.

Actually, I've noticed this on a few of my recent images. Not quite sure why - will investigate!
 
BTW completely agree with Donnie on not needing expensive lighting solutions.

Desk lamps can be a good option, just be careful they don't get too hot if you're pinning paper to them as a diffuser.
Long exposures with an LED torch can be good fun for this sort of thing too letting you pick out selected areas of detail.
 
What a fun image - to get the ideal depth of field I think a tilt lens would be needed!
