Thanks Steve, I think its the equivalent of seeing a lorry in Belgium, only difference is atmosphere and the lorry is only doing 70 mph, as opposed to 17000 mph!

The main problem I have is focus. I usually try to a focus on Jupiter and its moons before the ISS comes around. last night I could not seen the moons, (maybe I was looking at a star rather than Jupiter!!)

and processing helps

I think I was using 1600 ISO, with 800th second exposure and f6.7, a EFL of 1200mm, all on a monopod. ISS was difficult to find.

keep on trying.........................

Not sure if you're using VR (or equivalent), Mark but if you are, a monopod is more of an encumbrance than a help when trying to find the ISS. 1/800th @ 1200mm (in theory) only needs 1/2 a stop of stabilisation so is well within all the available stabilisation options available these days.

I've found that shooting as the ISS is straight overhead gives the best results - you're shooting through less atmosphere at that point so fewer distortions. For focus, I either rely on AF picking it or the moon up or presetting the lens in MF mode on an astral body of some sort. As for picking the ISS up, I usually pick it up at a relatively wide angle then zoom in once I've found it - works for me!
