We're looking at a cheapish week away, flights & hotel, maybe with a car to get around. We've heard lots of good things about Southern Spain: Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz, Fuengirola etc: I'm rather looking for suggestions that might swing me towards one part or warn me away from another. We're on a bit of a budget too, so, sadly, we can't do some of the amazing hotels in that part of the world.

I'm sure some of you will have travelled there, and I'd appreciate being able to tap into your experience.

If your looking to save some money, consider booking everything yourself direct. We do this all the time.
Search Google for holiday apartments in Spain and check out the ones where you deal direct with the owner (they're often Brittish from the UK sites).
We had quotes for 11 nights in August from £445 self catering on a golf resort with lots of pools etc.
Book your flights direct with Jet2/Easyjet or whoever.
Youdospain are usually one of the cheaper car rental places, try to get a collect full and return full fuel deal.

I can did out some links if you like, my wife usually finds em :-)

Suggestions as to where to go would require more info, do you want quiet out of the way, in the middle of the action, beach, golf, little village or main tourist area? Any kids going?

Best prices I've found so far are through expedia, with a week in Seville for about £450 inc flights. Thanks for the tip about rental. Links are always handy if it's not too much hassle, but I like expedia ever since they rearranged hotels for me once mid-holiday when the place we'd booked in Rome closed its doors just before we arrived.

We like historical places, countryside etc, but will also try to find a beach for a few days to relax at some point.

If it were my money, I'd be flying to Malaga and staying in or close to La Carihuela, Torremolinos. I'd then be using the hire car to explore the coast and the mountains.

Ronda is a lovely place to visit. Loads of harbour towns and villages along the southern coast. Malaga is a great city To wander around day or night.

Flights to Malaga always seem to be cheaper than other Spanish airports too. We usually fly with British Airways which are pretty much the same £'s as Easyjet/Ryanair etc once you add suitcases.

Sevilla is a beautiful city, with lots of historical interest and wonderful sites to see. The Islamic architecture in the Alcázar is stunning. I'd stay away from the likes of Torremolinos (the Benidorm of Andalucía) or any of the coastal towns popular with British people and aim for something more Spanish. Take away the Alhambra from Granada and it's just a regular Spanish city, and I always found Córdoba lacking in atmosphere (though la Mezquita is amazing). As said before, Ronda is a very pretty town, dominated by a landmark bridge and a legendary plaza de toros that hosts a famous bullfight in September.

Thanks again. I can't think of Torremolinos without seeing this in my minds eye. ;)
