Soooo looking forward to a new year. Loved it in 2012, and have lots of room to improve still.

I, for one, only work a 37 hour week, unlike you, so perhaps I have more time. Anyway, you've posted dome crackers this year.

Cheers.

Thanks Everyone :)

Week One: Sin

You may need to think about this one for a while, but it's all in there :)

W1 - Sin.jpg by MarkBerry1963, on Flickr

The real sin of course is taking your moral guidance from a book written by primitive people thousands of years ago, not the "sin" depicted in the photo :)

Hi, Mark, Sin, well not seeing it so I'll have a think about it :D

As a photograph it has a real aged feel to it which suits the old book. Nice shallow DOF and I like the muted colours, also like the close composition.

The RH side seems to be a bitter oranger than the rest and not sure what's happening with the A in AT lower left...seems to be going off the page

Good start.

Cheers.

A very good effort, nice dof and a nice interesting image, with spot on lighting for me
Glad you went with the "abomination of lying with a man" and not the beast part
Good start

Hi Mark,
I got it from the invitation part of your photograph before reading the text in the bible beside it and thought it a little controversial at first. Something that could cause you a little grief on here but once I looked in your thread and saw your by-line beneath the image I thought phew!
A quite thought provoking image, more so as you have presented a balanced, lets say "view" in your photograph and text, allowing the viewer to make up their own mind and opinion.
The image itself is quality, its well lit and composed with all elements coming together along with the lighting to really work. Good start to your 52, Iain

Really like everything about this, the thought gone into it and the layout and quality of the image...in week 1 you've set the bar very high

Thanks all :)

Iain, yes the sin (IMHO in case there are lawyers watching, but I am right!) is on the right of the shot, NOT the left!

Andy, the A is covered by the ribbon on the invitation, which is why it looks like that. To get it, read what you can see in focus, or look up Leviticus 18-22.

Hi Mark, Photo very well laid out, thought behind Sin excellent, by-line brilliant

Great picture, I like the lighting & contrast of colour across the image :)

got it after reading the invite properly, i like it very clever

Very thought provoking! (In terms of how far we've progressed, rather than homosexuality being sinful.)

I love the sombre feel of the image, very different to all the other dramatic photos, but equally effective.

Brilliant start - same first thoughts as a few others about the possible controversy of this one.

One question, is the DOF as shot, or has it been added / modified in PP? If it is as shot then very well done with controlling this and getting both relevant points in proper focus.

Thanks everyone :)

Graham, the DoF is almost as shot, but I have tidied it up a little in PP :).

also took me a while as i didnt notice both names were those of men!

Fantastic use of Depth, and i like the fact its quite dark and rustic looking, great stuff! :)

Oh I like this a lot, very clever, I too had to really check the picture, which may also mean I need to practice looking!

Great shot, great composition, great lighting.

Certainly something to aspire too :)

Hi ya matey

Impressive start to this years project for sure.....

I like it...lovely tones, nicely laid out...had to read all your thread to actually "get it " but yeah , on theme ( if a little deep) , good out of the box thinking
ps...can you use a book with bigger text next time please...oldies like me struggle with small writing

Hi Mark

Sin - original idea and well set up as the quote from the bible would have been sufficient but the juxtaposition with the invite makes it a more thought - provoking shot. Looks a touch yellow to me and agree with Lynne about the size of the font - but you have to work with what you have. Having said that the fonts are each of their time.

Good focus on the relevant texts too.

very nicely done, good composition.. it took me a while to get it too.. love the DOF and the lighting

Thanks everyone for your comments, but I've decided not to continue this year. It's still a fantastic challenge, and I may well pop in on occasional weeks and post a shot, but I'm doing the 2013 ETC this year, which requires 6 shots each month, and think I'm going to learn more from that at my level of experience. Unfortunately I just don't have the time to do both.

Good luck to everyone who's continuing; try to stick with it, as it really is a fantastic learning experience :)

That's a shame, Mark, but I'll see you in the 2013 Etc and on the meet.

Wonder if there will be a 2013 etc meet :D

Cheers, bud
