I've been trying and enjoying more product photography and it's an area I'd really like to explore more. I'd love to start working on a portfolio of product stuff but I'm struggling for decent items to take photos of. Ideally I'd rather be taking photos of nice things but even cheapish items all add up when you've got to buy everything you want to photograph. At present I'm making very little, in fact practically no money from photography and there's still quite a lot of gear I want to invest in so every penny that goes to items and props for photos takes away from potential equipment purchases. Ideally I'd like to be getting items such as watches, cosmetics, alcohol and perfumes.
Does anyone who does product photography have any tips for how to get access to decent items to photograph? Everyone says not to give photos away for free but other than offering free work to people to get access to goods I'm unsure how to proceed. I've thought of going down the buy and return route but there's a lot of risk that way if stuff needs to opened to take photos whether it can then be easily returned.
