Soundbar v Soundbase

As per the title looking to move on from the TV's built in speakers and looking to see what people recommend budget £200 ish

The TV isn't wall mounted. The soundbase means I don't have to find room for the sub woofer but is the sound quality notieably inferior ? I'm not looking to crack the plaster on the walls but hopefully improve speech clarity and "break" it away from the background music

Any advice appreciated
 
I have a Canton DM50 soundbase in my new house, previously I had a full 5.1 KEF / Denon setup but I wanted things a bit more simple, and the white option looks slick in my minimalist set up.
I didn't want a soundbar as to my eye they look a bit messy in front if a TV unless its wall mounted. I'd say generally the stereo separation is better on a soundbar but without a subwoofer the base is weaker especially at the price range you are looking at. The DM50 is a bit out if your price range but there are some ex demos from time to time.
 
I tried a soundbar and didn't give me the sound I wanted. Reverted to a Bose system

Thnaks for that I'll do some research on Canton. It's not a name I'm familiar with

What sort of Bose system did you plump for in the end ? if you could advise what you disliked about the soundbar that would be appreciated

Near invisible speakers. great full sound, fantastic surround sound.
Soundbars I tried appeared to have a gap between high/mid range & bass (or no bass with the ones that didn't have sub). The sound was too directional and no surround sound.
The Yamaha soundbar was the best I tried but cant remember the number.

It helps having a smart TV with Virgin for streaming music, radio etc.

Next stop 3D 4k 50" tv :)

One advantage of the soundbar is it is decrete just under the TV. Mine is suspended on a stud wall that contains all the boxes inside it.
 
Last year in the middle of plastering my living room I installed a Bose 7:1 surround system. That way when I finished putting the plaster up you can't see the wires, although now I can't really move the TV.

I can't remember the name off the top of my head but it's got amazing quality sound. I have old train sleepers for flooring and the one subwoofer is enough to make them vibrate. I'll have a look about to see what system I got, either way Bose has no complaints from me. I even upgraded the sound system in my car with Bose components.
 
I got mine 2nd hand for £400 - at that price it was no contest - just keep yours eyes open
