Hi,
I see many YouTube vloggers use a sound recorder plus cabled lapel mic to record the sound separate to the video, as the mic on the action cams are not brilliant, especially in windy conditions.

The Zoom H1 : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-Portable-Digital-Recorder-Version/dp/B003QKBVYK seems to be the most popular choice of the vloggers I follow but I see Amazon sells a slightly different voice recorder: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product...b-0822-4044-bbe9-441718232b3f&pf_rd_i=desktop that also allows for an external mic to be used.

Has anyone used either sound recorder and can comment on the quality?

Or does anyone use a voice recorder but a different brand or model that they can comment on?

I bought my Mrs a Sony one for recording lectures. I was really impressed with the sound recording and its background noise reduction.
 
I use a zoom h1, sometimes with a lapel mic, sometimes without. No issues with quality here. It has a line in, so you can add an external mic if want.
Even dropped it in a river once and it continues to work.

Ive been using a Tascam DR-05V2 for a few month. Not on camera, but for recording gigs and rehearsals. Im really impressed with it, especially considering the cost. I was going to get a H1 but this seemed to fit my use better, an di go tit for £65 in a sale.

For the past 7 years or so i had been using a Edirol recorder, which costed about £300, but the Tascam blows it away.
 
The same one! Yep, member of BCC. The news about Mike shook us to the core in the club, he was so full of life and always so happy and chirpy and never seemed in any ill health.

The only consolidation was he was out in the countryside, taking images, doing something that he loved and it was quick and unexpected.

I have used the H1 which I sold and it's pretty good for what it is, personally I prefer the H2n and own a couple, plus I have a pair of H6 recorders and have used all three to record audio to mix with video.

I happily recommend all three devices for the purpose you describe. The H6 is very useful as one can overdub on separate tracks and mix multiple tracks on board. Maybe overkill for what you want.
My uses are for when shooting video to grab really good audio, plus I have a recording studio hence the usefulness of the 6 track versions used for live events when taking videos of bands as I can use six mics to get fantastic audio.

Couldn't agree more - a cracking unit.

I also have a Zoom H1 but found that the body was very susceptible to picking up handling sounds which for some reason or other the Tascam doesn't do. The Zoom H1 mounted on the video camera was a definite no, no.

I was impressed by the Tascam DR-05 when I used one a few years ago - excellent sound even from the built-in microphones.
 
I've been using a Zoom H1 for years, it's a great budget audio recorder.
