Sorting photos out

I have 3 hard drives. 1 from my now dead desktop with lots of photos on it, 1 external that I was using as a backup for the desktop but I'm not sure where I'm up to and my laptop with lots of photos that aren't on the other 2 drives but may have some from those drives on it. Basically it's a bit of a mess. Does anyone know a good way of sorting all of these photos out so I have the whole collection, without duplicates, in one place? It's windows rather than mac.

Thanks in advance.

Are they all from one camera and are they sequentially numbered, or are there likely to be duplicate names?

There would be about 5 cameras photos, but I don't think there should be duplicate names. 3 of the cameras are different makes so they should definitely be OK, I'll have to check how my old 20D named files compared to my 60D.

You basically just need a file structure with some kind of order to it. Easier to get going if you have room on one disk for everything at once, but not a necessity.

There are lots of ways of doing it, and several threads on here where people share their systems. Personally I have everything in my "pictures" folder, that in turn has a folder for each year, and within those annual folders are folders for each job or shoot arranged in date order.

The whole lot is referenced in Lightroom, but that's beside the point, the actual file structure is what matters, and you can organise that within the OS. Then simply copy the lot over to other drives for backup, maintaining the same structure.

Once you've got your system in order, it's easy to keep on top of it as you know where to add new stuff.

That's the problem, some of it is structured from when I started using lightroom and some of it is unstructured from pre lightroom. I just want to put them all in one place then get a programme to sort them all out for me but don't want to lose any.
