I have a lot of jpeg files (several thousand) from various cameras that I need to sort by creation date, ideally to rename and append the date to the file name.

What is the best/easiest way to approach this please?

I think IrfanView can do batch rename, I have some apps I have created in the past with similar abilities. Can put something together (Windows OS) if you can’t find anything suitable or need something more tailored.

Thanks, will give it a go with IrfanView.

You can do it easily in Nikon NX-D, it is free to download, you select the files you wish to rename, change the name and choose to append tha date shot

Thanks. I haven't used any such software since I sold my Nikon kit a few years back. I've been trying to stay away from potentially expensive hobbies (e.g. photography, astronomy, HiFi). Now thinking to take up photography again (hence starting with cleaning up my archive).

There are two small programs (free) called Time Stamp Modifier for jpg files & Bulk File Changer, both can the stored date and/or time to match the date/time taken.

Then there is Flexible Renamer. That cane add time and/or date to the file name along with so many other things. Brilliant program that can work on single directories, Directory with sub directories and with rename tens of thousands of files in seconds.

I renames files that match certain criteria adds, removes or replaces data in the filename, the list goes on.

Thanks, Flexible Renamer sounds like it's worth investigating.

My only issue with flexible renamer is if you have 100 images in a directory and want to add a sequential number a selected few it is easy unless they are seperated by images you don't want to add a number to as it assigns numbers to All 100 images but only renames those you have selected so you numbered lists contains gaps ie you sellect the first 5 and the last 5 only those will have the number added but your nembered list would be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100. I would have like it to number the selected 1 to 10. There are ways round the issue though.

The above is free.... will sort your pics out in date taken order and has a mass rename options including variables such as date split into mth yr etc.. you can even keep original filename and add varibales or whatever..

I ahve used the program for many years as my goto image viewer..

I use Faststone but haven't seen file rename options, will have to look.

Yeah, been looking and found it. Limited rename facility for some of my renaming needs but will be very useful when I upload & rename new images although I have, with the help of Faststone's rename, just figured out how to do one task in Flexible Renamer that had me stumped. Flexible Renamer is more powerful as you can set it to rename in to folders and subfolder thereby doing all your images as long as they have a single parent directory. It's worth looking at as it is not restricted to image file formats.

But Now I can do more in Faststone it will reduce program switching, Thanks @KIPAX
