SORRY, SORRY SORRY

OK, try this:

  1. Start Windows Explorer
  2. Plug the camera into the computer and turn it on
  3. You should see an additional drive appear in Windows Explorer - probably D, E or F
  4. EITHER Go through the new drive folder by folder (there shouldn't be many) and see if you can see any CR2 files or files with a type of Canon RAW or something similar OR right click on the new drive, select Search, and put *.CR2 in
  5. When you find some files start DPP and browse to the folder you were just looked in, hopefully you'll be able to see them and open them
Also can you try starting DPP, go to Help/About DPP and then let us know what version it is?

It won't be the operating system...

You are actually asking the system to look for raw files (.cr2) and not just jpegs arnt you?

What software are you using the transfer the files from the camera to the computer?

Yep

Downloaded all the Canon ones in the process of uninstalling them and reinstalling them again

Have tried using all different sorts but none seem to work just hope that a new installation works. Tried looking for the software disc that came with the camera turning the house upside down.

Dont know if this has any bearing, perhaps some computer type expert will know. The Canon codec raw file thingy, that Nicki downloaded said it was compatible with Windows XP ps2, the operating system on Nickis laptop is XP full stop. Is it possible that this is the problem.

You want to download the latest versions of EOS Utility and DPP from Canon's website. EOS Utility will take care of downloading your image files, both raw and JPEG. It will also allow you to perform tethered/remote shooting from your camera direct to the PC/laptop. DPP will let you view and edit the files.

The latest software will make sure you can handle files from all Canon cameras released to date. If you stick your 450D software on then your 7D files will not play nice. Just go for the latest, direct from Canon.

Using a card reader certainly can simplify things. Once you have that you won't need to use EOS Utility at all for downloading images, but you still want the latest DPP.

Absolutely correct;)

Just copy your photos using the card reader to your pictures folder.

Picassa is a free photo editor that will let you work on most file types.

Current version 3.8 free to download here http://picasa.google.com/ it will scan your hard drive for photos and display them.
