Sorry if this is showing-off, but...

I'd love to know how you got into doing the Premiership stuff! I can't see me snapping Altrincham JFC for the rest of my career  (Which has only just started I might add :p)

It must be a great feeling to see so much of your work in print, especially all on one day! Well done

Nice one dude.

First to admit that given I was close to getting this stuff three years ago (plans changed) I am a tad jealous, but equally as proud of you given your success and that you are a Brizzle lad.

Well done,

Pete.

Hey thanks Pete.. that's a really nice sentiment :)

It has been a pretty good end to the season, I just hope that the summer sports prove as fruitful..

You not tempted to get back on the road for more sport?

Just worked out where Brizzle is! :bonk:

The center of the known world ;)

Congrats Dan!

Kudos to you. Excellent shots that should grace the sports pages of any newspaper ;)

Thanks very much mate

Thanks mate!

Mainly through a combination of hard work and blind luck, meeting/hassling the right people and making contacts.

Keep going with Altrincham, hassle the club togs of local professional clubs for experience and opportunities will present themselves.. just be prepared to perform if they do :)

It is nice to see stuff in the Nationals but today was pretty mind blowing for me. I'm sure most of my vastly more experienced fellow sports togs are pretty used to it but getting the credit on the back page of the Times was certainly a career highlight for me.

Yes, but really no....

I cant take the winter due to the chest pain caused by operations and it really is that bad. However, I enjoyed what I did and life has taken a different route which is OK at the moment.

There is a serious buzz to the real deal sport stuff however and one I wish that all the forum could experience....saying that I covered Newcastle United once and little 'Mike Owen' was a rude turd so not missing that part of it :lol::lol:

 I think he's scowling in every photo I've got of him, he doesn't look a happy bunny at the moment!

I saw him dismiss a kid asking for an autograph at the rear of the ground. No time for that, I mean, this kid pays his wages :cuckoo:

Git..

one of the nicest things I saw on Sunday was as I left the ground Jonathan greening the captain of West Brom standing in the ****ing rain in the street signing autographs and posing for pictures. Baring in mind he had just been relegated (and it was chucking down) I was pretty heartened by the sight

Can't say I have a lot of sympathy for little Michael Owen. He's more interested in playing for England than whatever club he is with. :nono:

I think any sport photographer should spend the first few minutes of any game he plays in getting pics of him (non smiling of course unless he scores) because he probably won't last the game before getting injured again. ;)

***Removed the scans as just thought I am probably infringing the papers copyright by reproducing.. even whith a totally rubbish scan :)***

Nah, I'm pretty sure you can use scans of your images which have been used in print for journalistic and critical review. And self promotion, obv !

Tearsheets and cuttings are fair game :) As is bigging up yourself for 3 hits in the nationals ;)

Nice one Dan

Thank mate :)

Totally agree.. Shame really as he was that good in his prime. Should have come to the end of his career with the sort of dignity that Scholes or Giggs have managed.

Good work Dan!

Ah sod it I'm going to stick em back up but smaller... whats the worst that can happen ;)

Cheers mate but you surely mean 4 hits :D.. got the front cover of the Times football pullout (the Game) too today!

[PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]-------Seriously good work------Congrats :clap::clap:

I do believe Derek Johnson tried to block even tearsheets being displayed but not sure is he did or not. I know snappers are no longer allowed to show samples on their personal websites and agencies are supposed to have all images galleries secured behind a username/password. There are still a couple of agencies who have not done this and some photographers still display examples and tearsheets. Maybe too big a job to check on everyone but they do occasionally check the fans forums.

Any pro football shooter should be careful of this as big brother Derek may be watching!

Yep, that was my concern and certainly showing the images themselves would be a no-no. However given the tiny size of the tearsheets I don't think anyone will have a problem (although I may well take em down again soon just to avoid probs in the long run).

Funny how Getty are able to show prem pics without the usual password controlled environment

Apparently they do it by searching for keywords etc.

One rule for Getty, PA/Empics and AI/Reuters, another for everyone else.

I was at the Sheff Utd v Preston playoff 2nd match. 3 AI snappers, Reuters, Getty's, PA, Empics and BPI where all there. Then there were the smaller agencies and freelancers. I think Johnson and the DataCo should concentrate on reducing the flood of big 3 agencies at matches and not worry to much about people trying to nick low res images from websites!

Sorry starting to rant now :(

I did my first prem match just over a week ago.. Blackburn v portsmouth and I am doing Blackburn v WBA this sunday.. all for local paper now accy season ended.

as for derek johnson .. i dont know if he is a fan of mine or if someone keeps grassing me up for little things.. i try to play by the rules... he phoned me up a couple of weeks ago and not for the first time... heres why :(

I had been asked by the fa to cover a couple of disabled england matches in the manchester area... there was a third party media company running the event.. euro cup finals or summat... they asked for pictures and i told them where they where online and they where happy for me to show them.. no problem they said..

6mths later derek phones me and says they have england shirts on.. your not allowed to show them..... sigh :( just browsing was you derek? :) he also mentioned my article on match accreditation and asked me to add his email to it.. hmmmm

Seems like he has your number!

more like someone has his number and my name :(

a lady from the fa phoned me a few months ago.. hmm maybe longer... said i have "fa accredited" on my website when according to her books I am not..... the call took me by suprise.. i didnt get chance to ask her if she was just browsing... someones telling tales... anyway i sorted it wiht her and I now have a letter from the fa saying it is ok for me to have that on my website.. I have it in writing :) so thaty backfired on someone :)

I did have an argument wiht a tog that i see at a lot of venues.. the argument was on a messageboard (ages and ages ago) and i had no idea who he was.... i said whatever i needed to say to wind him up as he was having a go at me..... since then he spreads/cut/pastes everyhting i wrote around every forum and whispers to other togs at matches and probably him making phone calls to derek and fa... all over summat said on a messageboard.. hes a spineless bitter twisted tog haha :) well people should take what they find in real life not what they find on a messageboard :)

Not a bad weeks work. Do you sports pros ever take assistants/bag carriers/unpaid gophers along with you?

Not being a professional photographer (and never will be), I've never heard of Derek Johnson.

Who is he?

He's in charge :)

he is at the top end of dataco who in turn control all the rights to football photography at all levels from premiership down to but not including non league.. dataco decide who can or cant have a licence to photograph football

he hasnt got the best reputation.. but to be fair i have spoken to him quite a few times and although i may not like the subject or the outcome i have always found him to be OK .. straight forward talker :) .. he has a job to do and some jobs rub people up the wrong way.... he takes the time to talk and is approachable..

Nope but some do take a tech. These download/caption/edit/ftp the images. This allows the photographer to concentrate purely on shooting.

Is this a paid position? What sort of software/knowledge is involved? Its just that I was at White Hart Lane on saturday and noticed a couple of the guys seemed to have assistants carrying stuff for them.

It really just depends. Some of the larger agencies may send a tech (in which case they'll be paid by the agency)and some of the freelancers (either paid by them or a percenage of any usage)may have their own. I know one guy who brings his daughter. Some grounds may provide a runner for the photographers who'll take the cards from them and back to the wire room.

Congratulatations Dan!
Well deserved, I too would be "showing off" if if was me.

Spence

Cheers Spence mate, much appreciated :)

Well done, seeing your pictures in print is a great achievement, don't worry about showing off, getting your pictures published is something to be proud of :)

Thanks mate.

What a result! (your photography not the match score  ).
Congrats mate

Thanks v.much, was a good day :)

We like these grounds a lot! (St James' Park and Old Trafford spring to mind)
