Having read the other questions on here with regards to wide angle lens, I hope that I may pick peoples brains on the issue again. :help:

The criteria I have are:
  1. Should not cost more than £250 secondhand
  2. Should be able to take a filter
  3. Needs to be sharp, not too worried about a supper fast f-stop
  4. Needs to be able to hold its value
  5. while a quick focus would be nice, its a nice to have rather than a must have

Unfortunately the list I have managed to get it down to is quite long. :thinking:

How wide do you want to go? That's quite a range of focal lengths you've listed. Some are way over your £250 budget as well I'm afraid.

I've used four of the lenses you mention. The Tamron 17-50 is excellent. Hard to fault and in budget. I chose the Sigma 18-50 2.8 in preference to the Tamron as I preferred the perceived quality of it. They are both very sharp.

I used to own a Nikon 18-55. Very sharp but cheaply built and the rotating front element won't help with filters. I've used a Nikon 18-105 a lot. Not a lot wrong with those.

I'm not sure that any of the really wide lenses you mention will be in budget. You may just pick up a Sigma 10-20 but it would be a stretch. Based on that I'd recommend the Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50.
 
I have the Nikon 16-85mm. Fairly fast focus, but very sharp. My standard lens on the D300s. I would recommend this lens.
 
Was thinking that some of the 10mm would not be used at that end much. But it would give me the 14mm to 15mm starting point there or there about. At the other end really anything over 70mm would be were I would break out the big lens But that is not to discount anything that would cover this end.

That said then I'd discount the 10-20's etc as you're going to find the range pretty limiting if you're not going to use the wide end. The 16-85 that Labb mentioned sounds almost ideal then but I didn't think they were available for £250.
 
Nikon 16-85mm is close to £500 new so will probably be around £350secondhand but it is a very good lens. I also like the Sigma 17-70mm in its newer f2.8-4 OS guise but again, not many used ones around. What about the Nikon 18-105mm? Will work well on your D300 and can be found new for under £250.

You can forget any of those Nikon f2.8 zooms with your budget of £250, they will be double that.
