i take it she already has the 18-70 kit lens....if so,then the sony 75-300 would be a nice addition, and cover a good range.i've not tried the sigma or tamron versions, but they both come highly regarded....

Yes it comes with the 18-70, swinging towards the sony but the sigma has macro which i believe will be good for close up shots.

It will be used for school project work in media studies, but im hopeing it might become a big interest for her and lead to a bit of paid work. I thought macro was macro.

true macro is 1:1,and you would need a macro dedicated lens for that, although a set of extension tubes,i believe will give you that(or more)for the fraction of the cost of a macro lens...

the sigma 70-300 will give you 1:2 maximum magnification....

here's true 1:1....

and a shot with my 17-70 sigma with "macro" facility....

Looks like a 1:1 macro might be next on the list. When will it ever end ? What I thought would be a usefull xmas present is going to take over my wallet!!

What sort of budget are you looking at ? The Tamron 55-200 gets very good reviews and can be had for about £70.00 new.

Excellent pointer, just googled it and can get it for £59 new. unless anything else is recommended soon I will get this. The reviews are as good as you could expect for such a cheap lens. Probably better than buying a used lens off ebay. Unless of course somebody tells me why I should stay clear of this lens. Thanks leaky5

Got a 2 hour morning gig in London on 20th Jan so might use the opportunity for a mini meet then.

i think i'm going to go for the sony 18-200 @ £200 from jessops

would like the 18-250 but at double the price of the one i'm looking for i can't afford it
