Hi Guys

Which is a better lens. the sony af f1.8 50mm Prime lens.

Or the Minolta F1.7 50mm Prime lens.

Got the opertunity to get either for around the same amount of money.

I am assuming the sony is the better being newer etc. but would appreciate your opinoins.

thanks

James

Hi James

I think the Minolta would have it over the Sony as the Minolta lenses are very good, but I'm not 100%, I'm sure some of the Sony users will be along soon who may have had / used both to give more help.

Do you have the opportunity to try them both out and see which givs you the better shots and if there is one you prefer ??

unfortunatly i do not as they are both on forums for sale. both within a tenner or one another. I have old minolta film slr lens on the camera atm. As it was cheapest wy of upgrading from the minolta Dynax 4. just buy the sony body which fits the same lens, so thats *** i did. Now slowly adding to my collection.

thanks

James

I have the Minolta, and am quite happy with it.

Pros :
Slightly faster (f/1.7 rather than f/1.8)
Solid build.
Full Frame

I have also heard good things about the new Sony (but not actually used one)

Pros:
New design, so may be better optimised for digital.
Lighter
SAM focus motor (optional, you may not thing this is a pro :) )
May have warranty remaining.

The Minolta gets a higher rating on Dyxum, but how much of that is hype based on the prices the 50's were going for before the new Sony came out I don't know.

If you can afford it, and the prices are good, you could always get both, then sell on the one you're less happy with.
