Hi all,

I currently have a Sony A55.
I do want to upgrade to full frame sometime in the near future (finances allowing).

I have been looking into purchasing a Sony A99, but I have come across conflicting advice regarding the compatibility of my current lenses with an A99.
Those lenses are;

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Aspherical IF Macro Lens A09 (Sony Mount)

Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 SP Di USD Lens

I want to keep costs down where possible so if I can get away without having to replace lenses then that'd be ideal.

Does anyone know if these lenses can be used on an A99?

Cheers,

Chris

I'm pretty sure both are FF compatible so should work with the A99 no problem.

There are rumours of a Sony A99ii or similar coming out sometime in 2016. That should cause a price drop on the current A99. So there could be an advantage to not being in too much of a hurry.

Note that there are two kinds of A-mount lenses: full frame, or crop (APS-C) sensor. All full frame lenses work fine on crop sensor bodies, such as your A57. The third smaller sensor gives a third reduction in angle of view, or if you like, more reach, in the sense that the angle of view of a 100mm on an A57 is the same as 150mm on an A99. All crop frame lenses do work on full frame models, but only properly covers the size of a crop frame sensor. If it's a fully compatible lens the full frame camera knows this and automatically does the crop for you. If it's not fully compatible you just have to do the crop yourself. All you lose is the extra size of the full frame sensor.

It's about time Sony committed to the a-mount. If they do indeed launch an A99-II this will show that they are still going to invest in a-mount which will be great to hear.

As with most lens related questions on the Sony system, first port of call shoudl be the Dyxum Lens Database

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp

In this instance, checking the user reviews for both lenses reveal positive comments from people using them on the A99, so you can be confident that they will work fine :)

You don't consider the updating of their top A-mount lenses, and the new A68, constitute enough evidence of commitment?

Not the A68 no, but I hadn't heard about the updates to their lenses. When was this? There's been a discussion recently about the future of Sony a-mount on AVF and new/updated lenses weren't mentioned tbh.

The Zeiss 24-70, 16-35 and 70-300G have had or are getting the Mk2 treatment.

I almost sold all my Sony gear a few months ago to buy Nikon gear when The doom Sayers were adding the last nail to the A mount coffin, then there came an A68 and even stronger rumours of the A99mk 2. I have all the Zeiss lenses and the 70-400 G(mk2) so to say I'm heavily invested is an understatement! I really want to stay Sony as the Zeiss lenses are just so good, many without equal and I'm firmly in the EVF camp, couldn't imagine going back to dinosaur tech ;)

I swapped from Sony to NIkon about 1 year ago as I wanted to make the FF leap (had the A77-II) and didn't have any FF lenses barring my macro. I would've liked to have stayed with Sony but the A99 was a bit dated and wasn't sure about the future and whether they would ever bring out another a-mount FF. I was worried about going to OVF (never had one before) but have to say I do prefer it overall. The main thing I miss is seeing the final image before you shoot.

Tamron DI lenses are full frame, DI II are APS C, both your lenses are DI, agree about waiting for the a99 II to drop the a99 price, the 28-75 is not AF-D the 70-300 is.
