Sony RX100

It's great, not noticed any warped images!

A glimpse of the sun setting up here in an otherwise non-existent summer, so I thought I'd grab a couple of test shots from my door to see how the rx100 iii would cope with the dynamic range.
So first up is a jpeg shot in aperture priority, iso 200, metered for the sun and then pulled the f/g shadows up a bit in ps6

Then a few minutes later I shot as above but in raw and used acr to adjust highlight and shadow to my taste. No sharpening on this just resized.

I think I'm going to keep this wee camera. Not only is it a thing of beauty to look at, I can see also see it proving it very useful when I get to know it better.

Can I ask what the RX100 MK 1 is like for macro ?

I know it does not have super macro but I am thinking I could crop in closer was its 20MP - also anyone had a Fuji X20 or X30 to compare it to as I am torn between the RX100 MK1 (Cant afford MK2) or the Fuji X30 ?

Looking at getting one of these, due to everyone raving about them, as a holiday camera to take instead of my D750.
I have the chance of a mk1 version in good as new condition for £170, is that a good deal?
Yes that is I'm looking for one now and would it at that price the ones I've seen have been £200 or more

That's good, I think I will go and get it tonight. I currently have a Sony HX9V which I love but the IQ just isn't there at the side of my DSLR. I hope I'm not going to miss the 20x zoom though.

I got this off amazon to cover my mk3. It gives the body protection from scratches and adds more grip. Less than £8 and easy to apply/remove without leaving a residue.

Cheers David. Think you got the best of the weather. We walked up on Friday, starting in low cloud and poor visibility, and on Saturday morning when we left there was a clear blue sky! Still, it made for a more dramatic shot I guess...

Eeek! Black definitely the best option. I went for a Sony AG-R1 grip on my mark 1 to give a little extra hold.

I put the Sony grip on my bare camera, (no skin) and found it improved handling significantly.

It's a great little travel camera, totally pocketable for go-anywhere shooting.

Evening all,
Does any one know which aftermarket batteries will charge using the supplied charger for the m3 version of this camera? Or is it only the official batteries that I can use in the supplied charger.
Thanks
James

Just seeing this now. Any idea if it will still fit into the official Sony case with this fitted?

Not sure if this answers the question fully but I bought this after reading reviews and it works great. Think I saw someone else here also recommending it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00EQWQ84A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Yes it does, as that's what I have too

I'll be getting it then, cheers - just for anyone else considering it, there is a £3.99 postage charge on Amazon (unless ordered via Prime or as part of a £20 order) but it's available from the same supplier on ebay for the same price but free postage!

i love that final image, its amazing to think something as truly pocketable can take something like that (with the right tog behind it of course!)
its not that many years ago that its only a dslr would be able to record that. times really have moved on at a pace of knots in the digital camera world

this thread really isn't helping my GAS :p. i don't really have any need for a compact, my omd-10 covers that but the more i come in here the more excuses i am making to my self- o and i a really need the mk111/mk1v :D

I've just about convinced myself that I need a M3 for a forthcoming trip to Disneyworld and this thread has been really helpful.

Have any of you had both a M1/M2 and a M3? If so did you value the extra reach of the earlier versions over the faster lens of the M3? I'm trying to decide between the various models.

I can get a good condition M1 with a case and extra battery for £200, or a brand new M3 with case for £469 (double cashback on offer until 6/9/15).

Any thoughts or advice very welcome! :)

be interested in this as well (any owners of both mk1 and mk111) also how good is the viewfinder on the mk111?

I've only used the MkIII, and the availability of a viewfinder helped sell it to me, as I don't think I could cope with a camera without one. Having said that, it's very small and a bit of a faff to pop-out. Plus it's annoying how pushing it back down again shuts off the camera. But I still find it useful.

thank you very much, is it very useable to compose with, or is it more there to counteract screen glare?

A bit of both I would say.
I've found I don't use it as much as I thought I might, but its handy to know that its available should the situation of screen glare arise.

Some from a wedding I was at this weekend (as a guest for once) with my trusty mk1 - I did put more in the thread RX100 vs LX100 but I thought I'd add them here as well :)

I had about an 80% keeper rate on the day which amazed me TBH!

...and are you M3 owners finding that 70mm is enough at the long end for what this is - a walkabout, take anywhere zoom?

Also, can anyone tell me at which distance the lens steps down from 1.8 to 2.8?

TIA

thank you mate much appreciated

Really nice photos... So what is macro like on this camera and has anyone compared it to a fuji X30 as in used both

I'd quite like to know that too - from what I can see not that hot (link - half way down) which is a shame.

Edit: A couple of vids to show...

Love the wedding shots - and that's just made my mind up for me on something I was dithering over. I'll be at my own son's wedding at the end of this week and, as father of the groom, obviously wasn't planning on lugging around a DSLR - and was potentially not going to bother with the RX100 either as despite its size it would spoil the lines of my suit! But it's coming with me now. I'll just have to store it in my wife's handbag!

I kept mine in my trouser pocket!

Wonder what the background de focus is like, with the Sony MK1

It doesn't use "background defocus" (assuming you mean software trickery some compacts use), it can achieve a natural shallow dof with its own lens at f/1.8 (the 1" sensor helps as well of course!).

I've put a couple of shallow dof images on this thread if you scroll back a bit.

No not software, but widest aperture you can get at something like 50mm or so, to throw background out. Although I know the MK1 might struggle a little, or would it? Will jump back and sift through older posts on this thread, :) ta
