Sony RX100

lol, no wonder im confused.

The reported size of the sensor depends on whether a guy or woman measures it! ;)

Who cares?? It's more than juicy enough for something of such a compact size.

True that.

But it means the 1.8 ness of the lens is a little less useful than it would be with a larger sensor ;)

At this price point, no small camera sensor is going to match FF in that area. But for it's size, pocket-ability, and price [as it drops down] it's some piece of gear. Really looking forward to trying mine out, seller has sent it out today an passed on track number. Hopefully it'll get here by Monday. It's going to live in my Jacket pocket, I always love to have a camera on me and carrying the big bag around gets tiring, esp with a duffed back.

I have an iphone5 and have only used the camera on it once! I just don't do instagram, and I think the cam quality is poor, no matter what the masses say. Grand for out doors in great light for images to post on facebook. But for those of use who love to process our own images, and have that extra detail, DR and print-ability if desired and low light performance ... the advanced compacts these days are really very good.

The Camera store reviewed this a while back and they were very impressed with it's performance up to ISO 6400!! It's going to be a cracker for gigs.

If it's better than the ip5 video I'll certainly make use of it. Mostly just for video clips of the kids, which the D800 is not ideal for, when they're whizzing about the place.

what video settings do you use on your RX100 and which editing software do you use please.
Thanks
Dave

After viewing some video samples on youtube, I can safely say, without doubt, before even using it, it kills the ip5 for HD video!

I had a play at the weekend with the 3 frame exposure bracketing, lightening fast response, this is one taken handheld in the fading light. HDR merged in Photomatix

I ordered one today from Amazon and will claim the cashback...

I had a play in the Sony center on Saturday and was impressed at the size and focus speed.

Looking forward to playing with this one...

My "used" one arrived by courier just about an hour ago. It's like new, as in, the wall charger was never used, nor the strap, everything still in original plastic, looks like it was pretty much used once and put back in the box. Sweet!

Had a quick play and took some tester shots with the little charge the battery had. Impressive from the off, first thing I did was shove the ISO up and take some shots of the kids. It's like using a compact that actually does what you want it to do! Video is super steady, you'd want to have a bad dose of the shakes to upset the IS on this.

Charging up now then I'll have a proper good play with it. Looks like I got a bargain though, at €400 delivered [£320]

Incidentally, I received another letter from Sony, stating that there would be a delay on receiving my cashback, strange, but at least they have communicated, just over a month now since sending off the claim.

I haven't had much of a chance to test her out, but took a few randoms of the kids, and the cat, earlier. Impressed with the ISO performance for such a teensy thing.

ISO 3200 jpeg, straight from the camera, zero adjustments:

I sold off the Fuji X10 I had bought through here, 2 main reasons: 1 - it wasn't exactly pocket size, and 2 - the ISO performance wasn't very good.

The RX100 eats it alive in the ISO dept.

When you have camera setting which you then want to store in the Memory you have to go to Menu>camera setting 5> desired number in the memory (say 2)........but then do you have to press the centre button of the control wheel to record that setting.

The reason I ask is because in the Manual it just says Menu>camera5> desired number. (no other buttons to press)

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but when you go to Menu> camera5>memory it always goes to Memory number 1 so if there are no other buttons to press why is memory number 1 not being changed all the time.

hope I have explained this OK

Appreciate any help as i'm a little confused at the moment

Dave

Nice shot but +1.7 exposure compensation?

Yeah I know, I was just fiddling about with settings before taking that snap. A little kick of exp comp does seem to give a better result for higher ISO, in A mode. Maybe not 1.7 though.

This is exactly why I bought a cam like this, something fun, small, to take snaps of the kids instead of sticking the big dslr in their faces all the time. They tend to be more relaxed with the little compact sized cams.

Sony DSC-RX100 [EXIF].
Lens: 28-100mm F1.8-4.9
Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/1.8
ISO Speed: 1600
Focal Length: 10.4 mm
Exposure Bias: +0.3 EV [not so high this time]

At 1600, in much darker conditions, [light fixture broke in that bathroom, only a lamp in there atm] it handled very well I think. If I'd taken same on my phone say, it'd be a snowy mess. Very quick adjustments in LR4, bump of shadows, blacks, took clarity down by about 7, desaturated the colours and used luminance to lift a few, like oranges and yellows. A little touch of noise luminance, you can see there is some background noise, I could have pushed it more but didn't want to soften the eyes any more.

Not tried any custom memory settings yet, must have a play around with that.

Anyone got the grip for it?

http://www.kleptography.com/rf/#camera_rx100

Seems you can only buy them from the states? Looks a nice job, as I find it a little 'slippery' in the hand.

No. But that looks pretty handy.

I've attached a small loop of paracord to mine and put 2 fingers through this when shooting. Just enough to add a little confidence.

Interested in the grip though.

Interesting...

I was wondering about some kind of leatherette or rubber that could be stuck on the front to make it more "grippy"

Someting like this maybe...

neoprene

I guess that might work - but if your fingers were moist then neoprene is pretty slippery. For $35 I'd buy that pretty grip if I wanted a grip. Or 10p worth of para cord ;)

Looking at the grip in more detail, it is pretty much just a moulded piece of steel [though it is the same colour and material as the body, which is nice] that you stick on via 2 sticky pads on back. Very possible to just DIY jobby one.

I have the Richard Franiec grip which really helps, also pimped it out with LCD protector and a filter kit for the front element.

@Shrubmonkey. I also had that letter from Sony, let's Hope they aren't out of money!

I just ordered the Sony screen cover and the Franiec grip as well

Did you buy it directly from the States??

I did, took less than a week to arrive, my lensmate filter adapter took about 3 weeks to arrive. Works fine, I had a collection of 49mm filters from film era so they will get a new lease of life.

I got the Richard Franiec grip and mag filter polariser in this week. Ordered them from lensmate / carryspeed directly. The mag filter was shipped via fedex from HK on Friday and delivered on Monday! The grip took about a week by airmail.

The Flipbac stick on grips are pretty good and a cheaper option:
http://flipbac.com/camera-grip-1-2-3-difference.htm

I always use a wrist strap with a small camera - cheapest option is a Ninteno Wi strap (99p) but the one I like the most is probably my Gariz marshmallow one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gariz-Universal-Marshmallow-style-Camera-Wrist-Strap-Black-/170946595021 - bit overpriced, but looks good and small enough to not get in the way.

A lot of people seem to like the Gordy wrist straps:

Just ordered the flipbac grip, can't go wrong for $10 really.

What is wrong with the one (Strap) that came with the camera?

I was wondering that too, even took it out the box there to see what was up with it. A bit flimsy maybe? But I never use straps anyhow, bought it to have in the pocket, it'll be whipped out whenever I see something I'd like to shoot. Though ... if you were shooting from a bridge over water .... might use it then ;)
