I got my new RX100 last week so I thought I would start a thread for this camera in case others are wondering about it or want to show off their photos with it.

Here is a review on it for those not that familiar with this camera:

Here are a few photos showing the basic capabilities of this surprising little camera. All of them are SOOC Jpegs. Nothing done to them at all except upload to Smugmug. All were shot in i-Auto+ (though I don't think the + ever kicked in on these) unless stated otherwise.

I was very pleased with how the yellows and greens came out in this shot, and I was especially happy with the color and detail in the areas away from my primary subjects (the central flower). If I had a larger sensor camera I never would have ended up with a shot I like this much just from framing and shooting. The DOF I got was just about perfect.

Here is an example of a fairly high contrast situation being handled very well.

A street scene where a lot of detail was captured very well. It was cloudy which made it a bit easier, but the camera still did a great job capturing a broad dynamic range without blowing any highlights, and it even displayed the range without losing contrast where it counts. Also I was having to shoot between cars and peoples heads blocking the shot, so the camera had to capture focus in about 1/3rd of a second to get this shot.

This just gives you an idea of the macro and background blurring capabilities. These "dandelions" are actually some kind of sub-species and are extremely small. This was entirely manual (mode and focus).

This is a cat that showed up while I was shooting the "dandelions" above. I switched back to i-Auto and it was easy as pie to get a nice shot of him.

And finally, a shot showing the reds since they aren't strongly displayed in my other examples. Manual mode, S-AF.

Nice pics, I had a play with one in store today, it seemed very good, quite quick and responsive, and very small, considering its sensor size, I think i will get one to replace my Canon S95 as i think it will perform considerably better in low light, and i like the video specs of the RX100 as well.

Looks lovely, I'd love better image quality in a pocket sized body. But the cost right now is astronomical, needs to drop before I'll swap it for my S95

I think I paid £300 for my S95 when it first came out.

I've just paid £450 (Digital Rev) for my RX100 (2 weeks ago). So, not astronomically different.
I can assure you that this camera is streets ahead in every way but for me the best thing, especially when my favourite subject is my 21 month old, is AF speed.
Really, this camera wipes the floor with the S95 (and any other P&S) if your target is moving.

My only gripe with the RX 100, apart from the stupid Sony file system, is the battery/card door which opens up inadvertantly far too frequently.

I think it is good value now. But it will get better I'm sure!;)

Well it's still astronomical to me, when you consider this is a 3rd camera for some, £500+ in uk is huge sum for a P&S, I don't deny it's the dogs dangly bits, so stop tempting me :)

I think its a bit pricy for what it is, but at the moment at least, its unique in the marketplace, so I think there may be some people willing to pay a premium.

For me, I think its real value is around the £400-£450 mark, however I might just pay the extra to get it now, though the sensible thing would be to wait a few months, mmm, tricky choices

Its not really unique, its a more advanced S95/S100, I had a think and I'll wait it out yo the end of the year.

I think the 1" sensor in such a small body makes it quite unique, i can't think of another camera as compact with such a relatively large sensor.

Anyway, unique or not i have just ordered one from my local Sony centre to pick up on Tuesday :)

I quite fancy one...when the price drops after Sony replace it in a year. :D

Agreed, I think that makes it unique as well as the RX100's sensor is over twice the size of the S95 sensor, I bought an RX100 on release and just can't believe how small it is compared to the Panasonic LX cameras yet still has a 28-100mm lens starting at F1.8.

I don't think the price is that unreasonable given how impressive the camera is and other close alternatives are not cheap either, I've been using the GF3 and 14-42mm X which wasn't that cheap and it's not nearly as good a pocket camera as the RX100. Aside from a few minor gripes the RX100 feels very polished as well particularly with its quick AF and shutter.

Fair point on the 1" sensor, but it's obviously aimed at attracting people who may have opted for the S95/S100 (with deep pockets).

you can look at this as an S100 competitor (in which case it is dear but does take better pictures) or you can look at it as a large sensor compact in which case it's still not cheap but it's not out of the ballpark either.
What it does seem to do uniquely atm is the melding of genuinely pocketable size & IQ of a larger sensor.

Give it 9 months & it will be cheaper & probably have some direct competitors.
Meantime Sony retailers seem able to sell what stock is available at full price & whilst demand is high I imagine that will continue - possibly up until Xmas?.

My external charger from EBay Hong Kong arrived today, it only cost £4.50, it's nice not to have to charge the batteries in camera.
