Sony Help - Manual Mode

Hello folks,

I'm using a Sony a580 but I guess a number of Sony's will be the same. In manual mode, having selected an appropriate ISO, I want to set the shutter speed - let's say 1/125.

I then want to be able to adjust the aperture until I get a correct exposure. But the moment I hold down the AEL button and adjust the aperture, the shutter speed changes.

I can do it the other way around - i.e. I can set the aperture I want and then change the shutter speed (without it changing the aperture).

Can I get this to work the other way around?

why hold down the AEL button?
If you lock the exposure then of course changing 1 variable means that the other has to as well to retain the same overall exposure ...
 
It's ok, maybe I wasn't clear. Holding down the AV button allows me to change the aperture without altering the shutter speed.

The AEL button was the only way I knew how to change aperture in manual mode.

The a580 needs two control wheels! I never use metered manual as it is ergonomically dreadful. I usually cheat and use A mode or P mode and use the flexible nature of the P mode to roughly get what I want via the front wheel.

I think you can set things so that the front wheel changes aperture and the rear +/- buttons will alter shutter speed or you have to hold down another button and move the control wheel to alter shutter speed.

I will have to dig out the user manual....

Manual says that control wheel alters shutter speed. For aperture you hold down the +/- button and move the wheel. AEL button isn't anything to do with it.

Thanks for the clarification. Have played around with it today and, although a little awkward, I think I've got the gist of it.
