Hi all.
So, I'm new here. I've gone and bought myself a Sony Cybershot DSC-W300. I've been playing with it and I have to say - I haven't got a clue what I'm doing!

I guess what I'm asking is for some hints & tips on how to take some great photos on a compact camera - if thats at all possible

All comments, hints, tips & advice would be greatly appreciated...

Cheers, Carla x

Do a search for composition on here - there'll be plenty of stuff on rule of 3rds and other complicated sounding things!! Have a look in the tutorials and guides section. The other things you need to get your head around are the relationships between the iso setting, depth of fields (f number) and the shutter speed, as this will certainly help you in getting the type of shots you want.

What kind of shots do you like to take, as this might help you get a few more replies?? :D

Hi Carla,

best thing to do is either have a rummage around in the tutorial section of this forum or google where I've come across a lot of basic photography guides before. I think a good start is to have a basic understanding of how a camera actually takes a photo.

Then perhaps go on and look at how to get good exposures and sharp photos. As a novice I was simply told to make sure I held the camera steady in every shot had enough light for each photo. But as you learn more you realise there isn't an end to what you can learn in photography.

Alternatively, go out and take lots of photos and experiment with the camera. Try out different settings on the camera such as white balance, ISO, EV, Focus Points, Flash etc.

Most compact cameras like the W300 is actually quite limited in features and doesn't let you do a great deal with things like shutter speeds, aperture etc which are important to a keen photographer.

Good luck and I hope it helps. :)

To start with I think I'd just like to take great family holiday photos, we are off to Disneyworld next month and there will be so many opportunities for some great photos that I'd like to be in with a chance of taking some of them :0) !

Following that I'd like to branch onto other things but I am starting to realise that a compact may not be the best camera for that all important shot....

Thank you both for your help - is much appreciated.
