I primarily have shot with Nikon and only shot with my D500 however, I'm looking to upgrade my kit finally to get myself a 400mm lens and another work horse sports body. I currently have a Sony A7R3 and was wondering what peoples thoughts were on using that and a 400mm f2.8 lens would be like?

Do you guys think Sony is good for sports and also do you know if there are many 2nd hand 400mm Sony lenses out there?!

I shoot Sony for sports. I came from Nikon D850s and a twenty year old 400mm F2.8 on one body and a newish 70-200 F2.8 on the others. The D850s did pretty well and I took many a shot I was proud of. The weight though was getting to be a pain and I yearned for eye af and some more fps. I now shoot sports with an A9 with Tamron 70-180 and an A9 ii with Sony 400mm F2.8 GM. Both focus exceptionally fast and have no trouble keeping up with the action. The Tamron reduces fps to 15 and the big white gives me 20fps. The 24mp files are very good particularly in low light and the bodies can give great out of camera results for jpegs. I'm delighted with my move as the kit is so light to what I was used to. Hoping to start shooting for Agencies in the next month and have just got all the FTP working so the cameras send images to the laptop wirelessly where they are ingested and given the IPTC codes ready to just stick on a description.

I have looked for 400mm F2.8 lenses for the last year. First to get one(£7K mint) and then to see how well I have done. I have only spotted 3 for sale and they were all between 7 and 8 grand. They are fantastic bits of glass and so, so light. The good news is they are probably the cheapest option from the latest 400mm F2.8s. The A9 is also a relative bargain. The issue is finding a 400mm as they only come up now and again.

I have not shot with an A7R3 but do own an A7R IV. It can do sport but if you are buying a lens that is so expensive it would be worth finding a proper sports camera to pair it with.
