I had a shot of the A300 a couple of weeks back and it seemed like a pretty decent wee camera, my only gripe with the Sony cameras is the proprietary hotshoe, which means you'll need adapters to use any sort of triggers for off-camera lighting

I tried a Nikon somethingorother (equivalent), Canon 1000d and 350d and the A300, and to me the A300 won. Not much in it though, just feel and controls put it slightly above :)

I love my alpha 350, I agree that the hotshoe can be a little bit of an issue, but if you look at that as a con, then Steady Shot in the body is definately a pro.

And you can easily get hotshoe adapters on ebay to compensate!

Yes, it's just a minor issue, otherwise they seem like pretty good cameras. I found the 300 a wee bit on the small side for me, but no more so than, say a Canon 1000D or a Nikon D40.

you must have really big hands flash as i thought my a300 was actualy bigger than the 1000d and d40 and any other entry level SLR

budget?
I think that the A200 & A700 can easily be argued as the best at their price points (depending upon your specific needs) & the A900 can make a very good case for itself too.
The A300/A350 I have more of a problem with for me as I don't personally see an overriding need for LiveView albeit they aparently have the best AF in LiveView for moving subjects. I can see that for someone moving up from a P+S that it would be an easy transition though.
