Ideally im after a 300mm macro lens ..... or even just one with a macro tbh

Anyone know of any good deals on at the moment? have about £100 to spend (I remember seeing a tamaron 300 macro not too long ago at £99 iirc)

lol you won't get any macro lens for £100, the Tamron is a 70-300mm telephoto and it doesn't do true 1:1 macro it does 1:2 which is still good but it depends on what your shooting ;)

It was a sigma actually & it was macro

Just checked jessops (where the deal was on) & its up to £150 :(

So what sort of quality can I expect from a 1:2 macro?

& whats better, tamron or sigma?

What's better varies lens by lens. Have a read of the reviews on the dyxum lens database for the lenses you are interested in.

Note, their "macro" section covers dedicated macro prime lenses. You won't find any 70-300 type lenses in it, they will be in the zooms section.

I don't do macro photography so can't make any recommendations.

To shoot macro for 100 pounds your only choice is a close up filter set or better yet, extension tubes although that requires shooting strictly manual. Unless you can find a used "plastic fantastic" aka cosina/vivitar/bower 100mm macro lens (no af so manual focus only).

If you want to macro I would advise to get a proper macro lens it will be more than £100 but will do the job so much better in my opinion, I bought the tamron 90mm and it is superb sharp as a tack and well worth the money. One thing I've learnt with photography is don't skimp on lenses you'll spend more in the long run

Not sure a Nikon is going to work well on a Sony LOL! Other options for dedicated macro include buying a used manual focus Macro Takumar and an M42 adapter, seeing as most macro is done using mf anyway. Cost would be under 100 quid all in. Worth looking for a used vivitar 100mm as suggested above as well. Some are af as well, although again, macro stuff is mostly mf due to the shallow depth of field.
