Hi, I would like to ask you guys for some help. My main use of my camera is motorsport and i need a much better lens, in July I bought the Sigma 70-300 APO Lens which is ok but the photos I shoot are just not up to the standard I would like. Maybe because this is a cheap lens and I need a better on. So my question to you guys is what would be the ideal lens for this camera? Price would be up to around the 200-300 mark but do have the option of going higher.

Thanks for all the help.

I think you're going to struggle to get much improvement without at least doubling your budget!

Do you use the 300mm end of your sigma much? Or would 200mm be enough?

Sorry, I meant would your new lens need to be another 300mm one or would 200mm be enough? 200mm will give you a lot more options. 300mm glass can get quite expensive!!

have you thought about a prime?

or maybe the sony equivalent 70-300 ( i think they do one)

i've also heard the beercan are good but aren't reaching to 300 though

How about posting a couple of pics that show how you are being let down by the lens you have (with exif) and then people can make more informed suggestions.

if you're going to be looking for better glass, then your looking to spend a fair bit of dosh.the next step up from the lens you have is something like this...

as you see,it's not cheap...
"only" £500 at Jessops http://www.jessops.com/online.store.../70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G SSM Lens-74819/Show.html - possibly less with things like quidco.
but yes, that's probably the next rung on the ladder.

Personally I'd stay away from sigma unless the gearing on the more expensive ones are a LOT better. I have only had my 70-300mm APO DG for 11months and the gears have been stripped already. They seem to struggle with the Sony Alpha from the research Ive done online.

Would also check to see if all Sigma lenses " hunt" as bad as this one does.

For what its worth this is the best ive got out of this lens http://www.ephotozine.com/u28017/gallery/1358156

Id advise you to look at the sigma 70-200 f2.8... major improvement, best lens ive bought! works well on the a200, better on the a700 ***! never stripped no gears yet on fast AF, and its done a fair few MX events this year in all weathers! ;)

hi mate...was only using the link to show the OP the lens in question, but yes..it could be missleading.£500 is a cracking price for the 70-300G SSM

That seems pretty pricey to me - comparing it with similar lenses from Canon and Nikon.

Is the Sony any better? £500 seems a lot for a variable aperture zoom - its getting towards Sigma 70-200 territory...?

only problem is that the OP wants to stick with 300mm,although he could get a 1.4x TC to give him 280mm F/4,but i'm not sure how the TC would affect IQ on the sigma.

it does seem pricey, but with £650+ being the prices quoted with WHE and cameraworld etc..

can't comment on the canikon offerings, having no experience with them.

if you have the latest HSM version then it won't strip gears as it's not driven by the Alpha's body motor ... ;)

yes, it's quite possibly the best in class for a 70/75-300 at that price level.
The Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM street price is ~£400+ as is the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR but afaik neither is as good & the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is £1100+...

However the latest HSM version did blow the circuitary on my A100 that controlled the HSM! All none HSM lenses still work fine though.
