Well; I got my new A65 a couple of weeks ago now, the 16gb card I ordered arrived yesterday so while it was nice and sunny I thought I would go make a little demo movie .... filming away in AF mode with the kit lens then thought I would switch it to manual focus for a bit of a play, soon as I did 'Camera Error' on the screen!!

I turned it off, turned it back on - now working again .... went to switch it back to AF 'Camera Error' again! .... So as it's only 2 weeks old, back off to Jacobs where I bought it ... get to the shop, sales advisor gets it out to test: all working again ... I then go home, decide I will get it out again for another run out ... 'Camera Error' Again!!

For some reason the fault only appears when its outside in bright light!!

Phoned Jacobs again .... new model coming in on Tuesday :)

Just thought I would share :)

assuming a SAM lens you were switching AF>MF etc. on the lens & not the body?

Good point, the kit lens is a SAM, and as I've read (I got an A77 recently) that if you don't switch the lens itself to MF (ignore the camera's AF/MF button), you can damage the SAM lens motor apparantly....

From my understanding..

The AF/MF button disconnects the mechanical screwdrive that any non SAM/SSM/HSM/PZD lens use, for a SAM lens, it's got an in-body motor, and doesn't use the screw drive, so needs you to set it to MF on the lens..

SSM lenses are internally built to allow the focus ring to be moved even if in AF safely, it's odd Sony didn't protect SAM lenses in the same way..

I don't know if it actually damages the lens focus mechanism, or just gets it out of sync or something, but best to be safe...

Yes it was switching the AF/MF on the SAM lens, spoke to the guy at Jacobs and he said that there was nothing I could have done to damage it so it must be the camera, hence why they have ordered a replacement :)

Don't forget to load the latest 1.05 firmware on it- apparently it makes a big difference in speed of operations.

Must be a fairly recent release? I checked up on the Sony site when I bought the camera on the 15th March and it was still showing 1.04 ...

I will upolad the new firmware and see if it fixes the problem .... not holding much hope though

Firmware upgrade did not fix the problem .....

New camera arrived today so have just been down to pick it up, battery on charge so will update as the day goes on.

Jacobs guy tested the original camera out again and the fault appeared straight away, he says that he has never seen that fault before and that hopefully it just a freak one off, I really hope it is or I will be chasing for my money back ...

I have had my A65 since Feb, and it has constantly had this error, and I cannot link this with the lens in any way, and thought it was the battery at first as I was using an unbranded battery along with the Sony supplied. However I have thought recently when doing a shoot and the intermittent way the error kept occurring that maybe the memory card could be the issue so I have put on order a faster card to experiment with.

Sony A65 “Camera Error” fix

This is what I have done and so far it works for me.
Update to latest firmware. I am using 1.05.
Reformat memory card using a computer.
Reformat again in Sony A65 camera.

Turn camera off, and remove lens.
Turn camera on and press menu and go to “initialize”.
“Reset Default” “Reset Rec Mode” and reset “Custom “.

Turn camera off.
Attach lens.

Notes…. Only change camera lenses with camera off. This should avoid future error message.
So far, this procedure has worked for me.

The A77 I purchased last week displayed the Camera Error message while using the kit 16-50mm. I wiped the lens and body contacts and the fault didn't reappear. Unfortunately the EVF was acting oddly so I've returned my A77 and will buy another soon.
