I just bought a Sony A7Rii and I’m enjoying so far. Only thing I can’t figure out is while recording video you can hear the sound of the lens focusing constantly. It has on a 35mm 2.8 lens and when I play the clips back it’s got a very noticeable sound from the autofocus doing minor adjustments. Makes them unusable. Is this normal for it? Can you stop it? Thanks for any help

I’ve never had to do that before. Surely though you’re not supposed to hear it focus. I thought maybe it’s just the lens or a setting I needed to change.

I used an external microphone and mount it as far as possible from the camera. I used to have that same problem when I had nikon cameras

then to move it further away use one or two of these on top of the camera cold shoeP1070281.JPG

So did you have the same issue on the camera? I wanted a light carry around camera. Kind of defeats the purpose if I decide to do a quick video I need an added setup I have to carry. Guess I’ll be forgetting it’s 4k and just use my phone. That’s so trash

in that picture is my panasonic panasonic G9 ii MTF (micro four thirds) camera, I P/x all my Nikon gear due to weight. Although the camera is same size more or less. T.he huge difference is with the MFT lenses. Small lighter and double the mm distance

No more problems with lens drive motor noise either. With one of my nikon cameras the noise was so bad the only answer was to stick a microphone on a long cable away from the camera. it drove me mad with frustration.

I suspect you looked at the 42.4-megapixel EXMOR R CMOS Imaging Sensor, totally unnecessary unless you are putting a picture on the side of a house such as a huge poster.
That is not all really one should consider = 2 card slot are better than the only one in the sony, so you have backup for example. does it have a USB SSD memory card port (G9ii)? does it have a burst pre recording tIme feature ? Just a few features of the panasonic G9 and G9ii

I am not a Sony fan after having the AX53 camcorder and their over boasting about image stablisation. got rid of that pretty quick as well

Can you do this hand held with your camera given the right lens

this I took with the pana 100-300mm (200-600 in FF) lens and an extn tube.

Ok you prefer Sony that is your choice And I truly hope you are pleased with it. Everyone who takes photos have their camera preferrence. It is just I am now a huge fan of Panasonic photographic MFT equipment

Ok everyone has to start somewhere and I hate to think of the huge cockups I made with camera anmd lens choices .

Yes I could. I’ve had over 20 years experience focusing mainly on macro so I’m sure I could and it wasn’t the megapixels that attracted me. It was a combination of things I wanted. None of that is relevant though as my issue was the sound of the lens focusing in video Nevermind

Fair comment
As for the noise issue personally I would send the camera back , as not fit for purpose. I don't think you can actually stop it the only solution may b e an extrnl microphone. Oh those maco shots WOW. not that it is really my thing at the moment.
I guess you bought it second hand as Sony stopped the production run a few years back. This lead me to believe why it was on the used market because the previous owner had the same issue with it.
AS you say you only just got it ,is it still under any warranty? so that is what I would do return it. Nothing worse than being mislead and not told of any problems. As I said before I am no fan of Sony anyway.

of course there is an alternative for videos and that is a camcorder. A couple of internet "friends" in Australia on my suggestion had a look and each independently bought the Panasonic 4K HC - VXF1 and are well happy. May be worth thinking about. I have b een using camcorders for at least the last 12 years . Obviously all panasonic apart from the Sony AX-53 which to my mine is just a point and shoot with litle manual imput.

I have the Panasonic HC-X1500 which is bordering on being a pro camcorder. I suggest a camcorder no litely as it can no does produce amazing video footage. example of latest trip to Portugal on the River Douro being able to smooth zoom (no lens change) is worth getting one for that reason alone. also no overheating with mikne as it has a built in fan

clips not continuous too many to put into correct order.

External recorder. Never use camera audio. Never
Maybe a bit harsh, but true.
Of course you can use the built-in mic, that's why it's there, but you'll just have to accept that it's a compromise and will inevitably pick up focusing noises, in my own limited experience some cameras and some lenses are far worse than others.

One possible workaround is manual focussing, I've found that video only really works well with no automation of any kind.

the built-in mic, that's why it's there
Its really there for syncing the audio tracks

External solutions start from as little as £20 lav mic to a phone and even thats a huge improvement

I have a a7sII and the same lens (35mm f2.8) - and its relatively quiet. I've filmed with the internal mic and a smallrig forevala mic - I don't hear any noise. You could go to a camera store and test your camera+lens combo to find what is causing the issue. Have you done a camera settings reset?
