Sony A77 or A99

Noise is one of the reasons I wanted to upgrade to a full frame so it's a bit disappointing to hear that's it's weakness.

If it's overpriced for its level then it's successor (if it ever arrives) will be expensive I am guessing :( But still not as expensive as changing all my lenses
Well if you compare it to your A700 it's a huge step up in noise performance. It's just when you compare it to the competition such as the D750 which is actually slightly cheaper and better in a number of different areas too.

The A99 is only just better than some modern crop bodies

Dynamic Range is also below some crop bodies too (and FF obviously)

DXO isn't necessarily to be taken as gospel, but it's a decent reference.

Well that decision was taken out my hands, as my wife bought me an A77ii for my birthday. Lovely camera and definitely a massive improvement on the A700. Disappointed to miss out on the low light noise performance of a good full frame camera, but I don't think the A99 was ever going to do that for me anyway.

Hi Tim
Belated Happy Birthday, I can highly recomend Gary Friedman's ebook on the a77II, in the menu: second tab (gear) page 5, SteadyS. w/shut. Set this to off, it gives steady shot in the VF but people found it was causing slight blur in the images, DxO Optcs Pro 10 is great for noise reduction, also look at Capture One (for Sony) it's free for life the pro version is only about £40, enjoy your new camera.

Indeed, happy birthday. Your wife may have done you favour there. :)

Thank you.
Will have a look at those settings and that book. I was given adobe cc subscription for a year for Christmas (my wife is very supportive) so am not looking to spend on software. How is adobe's noise reduction by comparison? Will give the Sony capture one a crack though.
Would still be nice to meet up some time though @PeterTheJet.

This is one of my first shots with my new toy. Loving the WiFi transfer to smartphone

Belated happy birthday. I don't think you'll be disappointed, it's a cracking camera and a great birthday present :)

The current Mrs Tim has the potential to be a keeper;) I hope you are as good to her on her birthday, noise reduction, not got CC, only Lightroom 5, DxO Prime is better Capture One is also good, as for the meet, any weekend is good, PM me.

She is a canny egg. I will make it up to her don't worry. Will have a look at Capture One for noise reduction. will have a look at my wife's work rota. I am off every weekend, but she works a lot of them so I would have to take the bairn. Not easy mixing photography and looking after a 3 year old

If your A700 can hang on for a bit the rumours are strengthening that the A99 will soon be discontinued, and that beta test models of at least one version of the A99ii are out in the field. Sony executives have continued to say, as they always have when questioned, that the A-mount has advantages over the E-mount which future developments will exploit, and that the A99 replacement has been long in development but will be well worth the wait. Of course it will be expensive, but that will drive down the price of the remaining stock of A99s, and of second hand A99s.

If your A700 is failing the A77 having been replaced by the A77ii is now a very good value second hand option as an A700 replacement. It would give you a definite good performance upgrade, use all your existing lenses and any hot shoe accessories, give you time and useful experience to decide whether you like the new technology changes such as EVF, and whether you really need the performance upgrade that full frame would bring. APS-C (crop) sensor cameras are still a particular sweet spot in performance value for money.

I speak as the happy owner of an old A77 which I bought second hand and have had for four years. That's the longest period of time I've had a digital camera without upgrading it. I'm in no hurry to upgrade, because it's still a joy to use, and I'm still learning how to get the best from it. Generally speaking I never think the next upgraded model is ever enough of an upgrade to be worth the money. I prefer to wait at least for the second upgrade. I know I'd get better IQ in more difficult conditions from an A99, but at such a cost, not just the cost of the body, but having to replace three of my favourite and most used lenses, the extraordinarily good Sony 16-50mm f2.8 and 35mm f1.8, and the Sigma 8-16mm, all crop sensor lenses. I'm quite happy to wait for the A77iii for an upgrade to my A77.
