I quite like the 10fps on the Sony for shooting my dogs - well it will definately help
The Canon is 4ps
The two cameras score the same % on the comparison site ......

Exposure comp on Canon is +/- 5
Exposure comp on Sony is +/- 3

I really like the Sony ........I like the popularity of Canon

This is a one off expense for me , its my birthday present . My head is battered looking at cameras ......The man in Wilkinsons Camera shop said my needs would be met with the Sony and then my friend said they must have a lot of Sonys to get shut of - get a Canon 100d !!
 
Ignore the badge. Which camera do you feel suits you? Buy that one :) 10 fps is massively better than 4 fps so if that speed is very important then buy the Sony.

Looking at the specs the Sony is way ahead. Canon is poverty spec really.

I would go sony ( i own an a57) it also depends what lenses you want to buy.

Am I restricted with lenses with a Sony ? I would like to shoot macro .......I haven't thought about the rest tbh !

Canon have a lot more lenses than sony cos theyve been around a lot longer, 3rd party makers like sigma and tamron tend to make all there lenses on all 3 systems sony,canon and nikon. Just make sure the lenses you need are available and at a price you can afford.

You can get the sigma 105mm macro in Sony fit. It's a great macro lens. There's also sony's 100mm macro and various others. I don't think you'll be short of choice.
 
If size/weight matters than go for the 100D, if not look at the 600/650D and save some money to buy a good lens :) Theres quite a big price different between the 2 from the places I just looked too. Id say a more comparable Canon would be the 60D.

Yes, the Dyxum lens DB only lists 115 current production lenses for the Sony system, Canon will have a wider selection than this.

Of course, you may feel that 115 is plenty to choose from (plus all those 2nd hand lenses which are no longer in production).

Actually, with macro you have picked out one area where Canon do score - they have the MP-E 65 f/2.8 1-5x Macro lens, but that is something of a specialist lens even for those that like macro!

Canon also appears to have a wider selection as they have IS and non IS versions of many lenses. Sony don't need this as they have in body IS. It seems to be something many forget when they say Sony doesn't have many lenses...
 
Plus of course as macro is usually manual focus you can use old manual legacy macro lenses via cheap adapters.

Sony is easier for macro legacy lens use though (or any manual focusing) as you have focus peaking and magnify view in the evf as well as live view whereas the Canon will only magnify on live view afaik (which is fine if you are using a tripod) and no peaking unless you install magic lantern. However only M42 fit legacy lenses fit Sony amount (via a very thin adapter) so you are limited to those or Minolta or Sony fit AF lenses used on manual focus (which will also give you green light for focus confirm).

Sony are missing a few lenses that other systems offer for example like an affordable 85mm f1.8 (they have an inexpensive 85mm f2.8 though) a 300 f4, a modern 70-200 f4 (there is the old beercan Minolta but it is not sharp wide open and suffers from CA).

However there are plenty of lenses to keep most people happy (third party ones too) many people may be perfectly happy with say just 2 or 3 zooms: an ultra wide (Sigma, Sony, Tokina or Tamron) a standard zoom upgrade of the kit lens (Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sony 16-50 2.8, various Sigma options) and a decent telephoto (Tamron 70-300 SP USD, Sony 55-300, Sony G 70-300, again various Sigma options and if you want longer lenses Sigma and Tamron do a variety plus there is the Sony 70-400 G). As well as the usual inexpensive primes eg 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 (plus higher quality Sigma options for 35mm, 50mm and 85mm) and budget telephoto zooms (55-200, 70-300 from Sony, Sigma, Tamron etc. And various Sony Zeiss lenses for the well heeled. :)

It is however much easier to find secondhand Nikon and Canon lenses (and Nikon and Canon fit third-party lenses) though as there are more about and some places like MPB only sell secondhand Nikon and Canon fit lenses (and a few micro four thirds etc) - no Sony or Pentax are even listed.

The other main difference between the 2 cameras is evf on the Sony A65 and ovf on the Canon.

Hahahaha I know ! But I do do other stuff too ........I love landscape , architecture and many other things .....I just didn't want any shutter lag as I'm getting with my point and shoot .....

I'm getting a ......drum roll if you please ..................Canon 700D

For the camera and 18-135mm lens £606

Wahoooo , its only taken me months to decide ! I am NOT changing my mind again . The manager in the shop spent nearly two hours with us and showed us quite a few cameras , let me hold and have a quick shoot with them . I real liked the feel of the 700d .....

I know I've got other bits and bobs to buy and they're all sorted - a uv filter cap , spare battery , memory card , bag and some literature .......
Thank you all so much for your help , it was very much appreciated . You thought I was a pain before , wait til I pick my camera up :lol::lol:
 
Don't buy a Sony lenses are really restricted, only 120 at the last count and Canon have at least double that and everyone knows you don't go shooting with less than 200 lenses in your bag ;)

Ex A65 owner here it's miles ahead of its canon counterpart and unless you have particular needs or are a pro (in which case canon all the way) there is nothing wrong with Sony:)

Why not but an older canon? 600d or 40d?
 
My daughter has a Canon 100D which I occasionally use and at first I thought I would get one too, but then I researched and decided 700D and then did some more research related to the type of photography I prefer to do and finally decided I'll be buying a 70D with 100mm Macro. Instead of a standard lens I'll get a Sony RX100 II.

Both Canon and Sony brands can be trusted and it's as usual down to what pictures you want to create.
 
On Tuesday I went to the camera shop and they advised me to get a Sony A65 , I went to another branch of the same camera shop and they advised me to get Canon 700D ....in this second shop I asked about the Sony A65 and she was totally against me getting one of these . She said the viewfinder was digital and you dont see 'true' colour ! She was extremely helpful as was the man in the first shop ........ so yesterday I had decided on the 700d BUT this morning reading your posts I'm back to being undecided .......its a really big thing for me as its a lot of money to spend and I just cant or dont want to get it wrong !!
Does anyone have any action shots to show me from either camera ?? (I'm so sorry to be a pain , stop rolling your eyes lol )
 
I'd do a spec check on the 700d and the a65 on dpreview to make sure neither are missing anything you want.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either. Which made you want to go out and chase the dogs around with it the most? Which seemed easier to hold and had a button layout you can use without thinking? You want that one...
 
To be fair the canon 70d is a step up from what was the a65's canon competition. I don't think you'll go wrong with either. Perhaps the issue here is taking advice from camera shops employees, loving the true colour line. Any modern SLR will be able to shoot your dogs.

....Assuming each offers you a spec you want, which camera FEELS best is the one to choose, as Suz says.

A camera is a creative extension of you.

Suz , thats the problem I have ......I have done many many spec checks but when you dont know what you're looking at it makes no difference how many times I look :lol:
I like then 10fps with sony but only 5 fps with canon but surely thats not the B all and end all of what I should be looking at !
I like the feel of both TBH ......my other point and shoot is a Sony and never had a problem with it , apart from shutter lag ! I've never owned a canon but I wouldn't dismiss it .......I've also looked at the specs of the 100d against the 700d and there doesnt look much difference between the 2 ..

Between the 2 canons the 700d is better. Articulated screen, better flash range, stereo mic for video and better battery life. The 700d is much better in many ways. It also has 5 fps not the 4 of the 100d.

Sony has more fps, more focus points and 100% view finder coverage. It also has loads more flash options that neither canon seem to have eg rear curtain sync, high speed sync.

I'd get the sony but I'm a sony user so I would say that :)

Ive owned the a65 and still own 2 Sony camera's Nowt wrong with the a65 the fps rate is very good- ideal for moving dogs :D

So I stand by the suggestion I made there of a Nikon 1 J2 - Jessops have them for £199 now with kit lens (brand new with 2 year Nikon warranty) and you can add the little telephoto lens which gets decent reviews: http://www.photozone.de/nikon1/700-1nikon301103856v1

Sure it's a much smaller sensor, but the AF is supposed to be pretty nippy, it has a viewfinder and it's a lot smaller and less hassle to carry around or take when walking the dogs than a big 700D or A65 with a telephoto lens.

There is an owners thread here in this forum so you could ask there what people think of their cameras and if it would be suitable for you? If you are unsure about a dslr due to size/weight then there is a chance that once the shiny new camera novelty factor wears off you stop using it as you said because you don't want to lug it around..

I have a very good point and shoot but never a DSLR which is going to cost a bit so I want to choose right .....

After having some hands on with a couple of cameras I've changed my view on 'lugging' it around . I thought I would end up with a big metal case full of lenses and now I know differently . Im looking forward to getting my first DSLR .......cant wait .

Btw, your live music shots are really hot! You capture the moments well (I'm a musician and retired art director among other things). :thumbs:

Hahahaha we are sat on the settee looking at Youtube reviews for both cameras :lol: its ridiculous , I've never been so indecisive in all of my life . I suppose if it was my money I was spending I would just go for it and hope for the best .....

I like the touch screen on the 700D
I like the 10fps on the Sony
I like the quality feel of the Canon lenses
I like the transluscent mirror technology of the Sony

We are going to shop number three tomorrow ......I'm going to have a hold and play with both cameras and then I AM GOING TO DECIDE !!

It is still between the Sony A65 and Canon 700D
 
I know that pleasure well! I started off about 2 months ago considering a Canon 100D after using my daughter's. Then comparing it with the 700D and deciding that would suit me better (easier grip and articulated screen etc). I thought it was settled and then the 70D was launched and for me, after handling all three, that's the one.

It's better not to be in a hurry with such decisions - They all have something good to offer. :thumbs:

Fair enough - they are all good cameras so you cannot go 'wrong' really - look at lenses (prices, what's available, reviews) if comparing brands too.

Don't rush - although keep in mind the current Canon Autumn Cashback
Promotion ends on: 31 October 2013 - however as Nikon have just launched their Christmas/Winter one, Canon may also do one over that time or extend the current one? Don't know if Sony will do one but they did last year.

....But note that not all Canon products are included in their cashback scheme.
