Been a while since I've used it as I've been very busy but are there any new lenses or adapters that have come out yet that can cope with the cameras af speed other than the 70-200mm? I don't think there were any ultra sonic ones before, are there any now?

When you say "cope with the cameras AF speed" what do you mean? I use the 50mm 1.8 and the AF speed is fast. Are you looking for a particular focal length?

Originally I wanted something to capture my dog with whilst he was charging towards me etc, my D3 and 80-200mm was lovely for this and a bonus being this lens in AFS could be found at a good price but the A6000 seems to be let down by the lenses which I believe use the focusing mechanics better suited for video (step focusing or something?)

The focusing with my 50mm is fast compared to many other cameras but it still doesn't feel as fast as it could be and I have a feeling it's the absence of ultra sonic lenses which is the problem? The 70-200mm is meant to be far better as it has dual motors but for my use it's too expensive plus hard to find really cheap second hand versions.

I've been tempted to look at manual focus lenses in the telephoto range but fear I'll be crap at it.

If you're not happy with the AF performance at capturing your dog, manual focus won't help :0). I've got some shots of our little dog running straight towards me and sharp and well focussed. The priority is using the right settings and keeping the subject well tracked whichever way they're running. Keep your shutter speed up, AFC, Face tracking if you're capturing people and a suitable aperture.

Also, single point focus is always better than expecting the camera to pick the right place too.

I'll upload some shots when I'm at the laptop.

I found zoned works fast but as you say it can often focus on the snout rather than the eyes. 50mm is probably too short also for galloping dog shots as I was always more comfortable at the 150-200mm range.

Extra fast shutter speed does seem to go a long way with the A6000. Perhaps I'm expecting too much comparing it to the D3 and an ultra sonic lens.

I just noticed that you can now get ultra sonic lenses for the A6000 but the prices are staggering.
