Not too sure if this is the right place to post this so please feel free to move it if it's not.

Up until today I was dead set on getting a Sony A6000 and getting back into photography. But for some reason I decided to have little look online at the Sony A77 and I'm intrigued.

My main reasons for wanting to buy the A6000 were the size, the quick AF and the high FPS burst rate. Size being the biggest factor of all though.

But now I'm thinking to myself that apart from the size the A77 is very appealing. And 2nd hand prices are pretty good and you can get it with a very good 16-50mm f2.8 kit lens.

Could I please have some opinions from anyone who owns one or both of these cameras. Just pros and cons basically. And just your experiences with them to help me make my decision.

I like to take pictures of my kids and dog playing. I also like sports ( mainly rugby ) and wildlife as well and landscapes and I'm also wanting to try macro. So do you have a recommendation that would be best suited to these?

Thanks in advance

Steve.

evf screen better on a77, and the size helps a lot with bigger lenses, I guess the af c focus is better too, manual controls better placed too, the 16 50 f2.8 is a great lens, but big n heavy

but the a6000 is smaller lighter has apps and probably slightly better image quality

Thanks for your input.

I've spent the last few days reading every review I can find online and every video review and comparison I can find on YouTube. And I've come to the conclusion that the A6000 is definitely the camera I am looking for.
It has almost all the features of a DSLR in a much smaller package.

Now the thing I need to decide is whether to buy the twin lens kit with the 16-50mm power zoom and the 55-210mm lens or to buy body only and get the 18-105mm f4 G series lens and maybe stretch to a 50mm f1.8 as well.

id say get a old manual 50mm 1.8, or the 60mm sigma, i dont find 50mm on 1.5 crop that compelling :(
panamoz might be the cheapest place, is overseas though

I didn't even realise sigma made e-mount lenses. I thought only sony made them. Just looked on park cameras and seen a load. So would that be the sigma 60mm 2.8?

^^ it would, it's the only lens I have ever used that is absolutely tack sharp wide open in the most extreme few pixels of each corner of the frame. The sigma 60 2.8 would be a bargain at £500.

Just be aware that if you use Sigma lenses you lose the fast AF advantage of the A6000. You need supported SONY lenses for that.

Thanks for that. I have been reading up on it and it also seems that there is no OSS/image stabilisation on that lens either. Not really problem for taking shots but should I decide to make use of the 1080p video recording, it might not be the best.

i cant remmber if theres oss on the sony primes or not

I know there is on the 50mm f1.8 not sure about the others.

I think I'm going to stick with the 50mm myself. I've seen it at a good price from a few online shops and also fairly cheap 2nd hand.

I really wouldn't worry about oss on a 50mm lens unless you're shaky or will be shooting static subjects in low light. The 50mm only needs a shutter speed of 1/80th second for shake free images. Go any slower and you're likely to see motion blur anyway unless you're shooting a wedding or something.

BTW, 50mm is quite long on a crop camera, best suited to portraits.

I'm not a shaky person so I should be fine, although my asthma medication can sometimes give me small tremors in my hands.

Would the 18-105 f4 be a good all rounder? If so I will just get that with a body only a6000. And leave the 50mm out.

I don't want to spend out if I don't have to. But I want to have the areas covered that I like to shoot ( kids, playing, the dog running/playing, landscape/scenery and a bit of sports.

Although it might be worth me buying the twin lens kit a6000 as well as the 18-105 f4 as the twin lens kit includes a 55-210mm which would have me covered for sports. And I could probably sell the 16-50mm straight away.

What about the Sony A7? It's also full frame like the A77 but more compact I think?

Sorry my mistake.
