Hi, I have a Sony a100. Admittedly its not the most up to date of cameras but I love it. When I switched it a few days ago it vibrated and made a high pitch noise. Does anybody have any ideas what may be the problem and how I can put it right please.:)

Check with Sony - my Cybershot had that issue and it was a known defect however I was too late to contact them and they basically said tough...

not got or used one but is it cleaning the dust off the sensor ?

probably but it sounds like it maybe malfunctioning.
Has it suffered a bump?

I haven't dropped it or anything. I will check with Sony, thanks for the suggestions.

Does it have the 18mm-70mm kit lens attached? Sometimes they fail and make a noise similar to one you have described. Do you have another lens to try on the camera to see if it still makes the noise?

Is the steady shot indicator flashing? Excessive vibration on power up often indicates a broken steady shot assembly.

This probably sounds dumb, but where is the steady shot indicator light. The only light I can see is a red one, top left corner but it doesn't flash just comes on then goes off. I do have to use steady shot as I shake a lot.

I have checked the camera without a lens and it makes no difference.

Im not entirely sure, in an a100, but Its usually a little bar chart in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder. If it flashes constantly, your SS is knackered.
