Hi. I am considering buying this lens for my sony a300. I already own the 50mm 1.8 (nifty fifty) and I love it. I'd like to see what I can do with a wider angle lens. I'm not really into landscape but I'd use it for photos of my daughter and dog ect..

I'd just like to know how wide is this 35mm going to be in comparison to my 50mm. Also my kit lens is 18mm to 70mm but im not sure how the focal distance compares in a fixed lens to my zoom.

Info on lens.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B003XU4B4A

Thanks.

Ah cheers. I wondered if that would be the case. I don't understand why they call it a wife angle when all kit lenses come with a 18mm wide. To me that seems wide angle.

Would you say it's worth buying a 35mm if I own the 50mm?

on dx sensor camera such as a300 , the 35 mm lens act as a normal lens. the sensor doesn't cover all of lens projected area. only 75%. so 35*1.5 you get 52.

Oh right. I asume the same rule applies with my 50mm then. Is it worth buying a 35mm? I just fancy something different to play with but im not sure if it's worth it and I should just keep playing with what I have.

35 mm is actually very useful. It act as normal lens i.e what you see you can shoot instead of having to step back a bit using 50mm.

Best way to find out if it suits you is to set your kit lens to 35mm, then use it for a day at only that focal length. On a crop sensor like your camera has, I prefer 35mm to 50mm, you may or may not.

In the old days, 35mm on film (equivalent to full frame these days) was considered wide angle, because most cameras just came with a 50mm. These days, 28mm (18mm on crop) or below is considered wide angle.

The 35mm f1.8 prime lens will give you the exact same field of view as your 18-50mm zoom lens when set to 35mm.

The advantage of the 35mm f1.8 is that it's maximum aperture is f1.8 whereas your 18-50mm lens will be at f4.something or maybe even f5.6 at 35mm.

Cheers guys. Yeah mine is at 5.6 which makes it a little slow. Ill keep looking into it. Thanks for the advice.

theres the 30mm macro and 28mm 2.8 minolta lens aswell, in that area and price range

Cheers guys. I bought a lens off ebay. Payed £99 for the sony 35mm 1.8 sam all boxed up in mint condition with uv filter. Im picking it up tomorrow local.

Strangely it was the only used auction of this lens. People must not want to sell them i guess. Only new ones on ebay and amazon for around £145-£150

Well I have the lens now. Just playing with it and I love it. I'm now questions if I need my 50mm and should maybe just sell it. I could achieve great portrait shots with this lens I think.
