Looking at Sonos for throughout the house as family music collection all seems to be digital now.
Is Sonos best/most versatile or are there better alternatives. Is sound quality acceptable for the money?
Not expecting it to be audiophile sound quality but would like opinions before spending over a grand

I have a Sonos system. I haven't compared it to any alternatives, but I'm happy to let you know what I think.

Ease of set-up and configuration: Excellent.
Ease of use: Excellent.
Sound quality: Very good.
Software stability: Excellent.

Biggest drawback: Currently it's not possible to set up multiple music libraries. This can be a major drawback if the system is to be used by multiple people with different tastes. I'd rather not have to scroll through my wife's collection of choral music to find what I'm looking for, and she'd certainly rather not have to scroll through my (much larger) collection of prog rock to find what she's looking for, but there's no decent workaround yet. People have been asking Sonos about this for years on their forum, so it's really quite surprising that they've never fixed it.

I have a few pals with Sonos stuff and it gets high 5s.

I am considering something similar when we move house in a few years, for the moment we have a pair of the Roberts 93i Streams which we can move about as required.

I went from a majorly expensive hifi (top end Naim which I then had modified) to a Sonos and while the sound quality is not up there, it is amazingly good for the money as a music player - I use some active speakers. I also have a play 5 which is good but needs careful positioning as it can be boomy - the new play 5 is not ported so ought to sound way better. The soundbar and a couple of play 1's is well worth looking at if you want to plug the TV into the system, but purely for music I would suggest some active speakers with the Sonos.
Everything Stewart says above is totally on the money.

Sonos is great, but depends what you want to stream, own music, no probs. Spotify no probs,

Apple Music, well there is the kicker, sonos will be allowed to do this by the end of the year, supposedly, but they are very quiet and they don't have many days left.

Just buy Sonos. Don't get Apple Music because they will never support Sonos ;) Spotify and Tidal (and every other decent streaming service) do.

Sonos stuff often pops up on black Friday sales :-)

There's also a pretty good deal for Christmas - two Play:1s for £300.

Cheers all, very much appreciated. I was looking at the soundbar for the living room to replace current one and save adding another box but would need to replace current sub as well which makes it s bit prices for what it is. All family are now apple and iTunes so comparability should not be an issue, or is that Apple Music?

you can use a dock to share your I-stuff over the sonus network.

personally I would not buy the sonus to replace kit for an in place AV system.

the sonus stuff comes into play on bedrooms, study, dining room, kitchen etc.

I have the sound bar. Pretty awesome. Don't rush to buy the sub though. Unless you like masses of bass you may find the bar on its own enough.

Just wondering how it will compare to the new play5 for music. Think I just need a push, used to have a very high end hifi and thx system and pretty much had nothing since children so any things going to be a great improvement!

Don't know. The old 5 is pretty amazing for music but IMO the playbar is better. Find a demo room and take your time ;) Sonos devices are pretty much the same price everywhere so find a specialist and audition stuff before you buy.

If you have iDevices and are into hifi then this will interest you.... http://www.sonos.com/en-gb/trueplay-speaker-tuning-software

Sonos after sales is excellent, I bought an amp from a boot sale, took a chance but it didn't power up so I contacted them to see if they offered a repair service, they took the serial number and told me it was a 2007 amp so well out of warranty but they would replace it with a brand new one for £92 including collecting the old one, 3 days later a new Sonos amp arrived before I'd even got the old one boxed up to go back

10/10

I auditioned and auditioned Sonos always left disappointed really glad I didn't buy blind; then I auditioned LG Music Flow systems and instantly fell in love, currently have 2 H7s, 1 H3 and a R1 LG Mesh bridge, absolutely stunning it is IMO..

others I tried were Pure Jongo which you can forget immediately, and Bose Soundtouch which I quite liked but LG Music Flow had the edge for me.

Interesting, will try and get a listen to both

Sonos 1s are an easy way to get started. Excellent little speakers with a sound that is quite amazing considering their size. Sonos also does a iOs app that enables the settings of the speaker to be tailored to the room using an iPone or iPad. Simply brilliant.

I see Richer Sounds are doing the series one Sonos 5 for about the same money as the current Sonos 3. Could be tempted by a couple of them but probably overkill for small bedrooms ?

Is that the old 5 or the new? I have the old 5 in the kitchen and the 3 in the bedroom. 3 is very nice but 5 is a whole lot nicer :)

Yep old five but under £250 it's almost daft not to have one in every room. Just trying to figure how much it will cost me in shoes and handbags!

Well you'll pay circa £160 for a Play 1.

If you want two, it would obviously cost you more than a Play 5 at that price.

Depends what you want. Two Play 1's can either be used as a stereo pair or you can move them to different rooms and have them playing different stuff (or the same).

Play 5 has a much fuller sound - although the Play 1 is damned good.

Where can you get one for under £250 it's 280 on the website

Sorry, you are correct £279, but still s bargain compared to the new version at £429

If you can't set the sonos up with multiple libraries can you set it up with multiple playlists so that you'd only have to look within that playlist to find music you did like?

You can set up multiple playlists within the Sonos app. You can have different tracks/playlists playing at the same time in different rooms if you have several speakers. Or they can all play the same thing.

I bought into the Sonos system about 5 years ago. Everything is still rocking and we love it. It's wife friendly and that was BIG MUST. I bought the CR200 controller at the time as well but support for that is dwindling as smart phones in the home are taking over. I can't imagine being without it. 2x Play 5's 1xPlay 3 bought through this forum and Sonos Connect so my Cambridge Audio speakers are still in the loop, love it.
