Hi,

I'm off to HK in a couple of weeks and I've just bumped an older thread in the 'Shopping' section with a list of the kit I will be looking at along with UK and HK Ebay prices.

After a bit more digging around, the Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM is looking like a good candidate for what I want. I do a lot of motorsport and am not adverse to a bit of wildlife so I want something long. At the moment the longest combo I have is my Sigma 150mm 2.8 with a 2x TC (or 2x2x but that gets quite soft) equiv 300mm, so whilst the likes of the Nikkor 70-300 looks nice, it'd be an IQ step rather than length. I know that 6.3 at the telephoto end is a little slow, but for the money it looks like a good trade-off.

Realistically I'd sell one of my Sigma 2x TCs if I did get this as I think 1000mm would be quite enough! :bonk:

Just after a bit of a sanity check really, have you guys/gals used this bit of glass before?

Cheers.

Yes,

I've used it. It's very big, and very heavy, a bit of a brute in fact. It works well, and is very efficient, IQ and sharpness are definitely related to shutter speed with this one, and I found it fine being used on a tripod in good light.

6.3 however is a very small aperture, and to consider sticking a 2X converter on it, at least in my mind, means that you would be restricted to a tripod, shooting stationary subjects in bright sunlight, and your long lens/tripod skills had better be good.

I don't think it's a trade off situation at all, I think that you'd be far better off cropping - I think the end result would be superior.

Thanks Doug, having used it is there an alternative with a similar range that you'd suggest or do you think this is the 'best buy' in this area of range vs budget?

Thanks,

Doug (another Doug lol)

Won't get you to 1000mm but you could consider the Nikkor 300mm F4.

I use it with a 1.4TC and it's great.

Can get good Bird shots from a hide and it's portable as well.

I've checked out the f4, and whilst I'd love the contant aperture, I think I do need the flexibility of a zoom for motorsport. If I'm moving positions a lot, then a fixed 300mm or 450mm might get a tad annoying.

I need an 18-500 2.8 for under £500, anyone know of one? ;)

(P.S I imagine 1000mm would make for a nice moon shot.....)
