Someone wanted to buy something from you but you didn't want to sell to them.

probably more theoretical but what if someone wants to by an item from you on a thread but you don't want to sell them.

Case in point is I often read the disputed threads just to see what's going on and a few times I have seen buyers acting in a rather childish manner.

Things like "you have been on the forum and within 5 minutes you haven't answered my post so I am withdrawing my offer you cheating mofo"

?

under forum rules can you just say that or is it a bit like ebay where if they offer up the cash?

I am just wondering what would happen if you just said sorry I am not selling to you as I think your attitude sucks?
 
I thought you could choose who you want to sell to.

I view these forums as a friendly place and if someone who I thought was disruptive or rude wanted to buy I'd politely decline their offer... but as I haven't come across anyone like that here I'd sell to anyone :D

In life I've certainly declined offers on that basis, why enter into any agreement with someone you don't like or respect unless you're desperate, and I'm not desperate :D
 
An item displayed for sale on a website is generally construed as an "invitation to treat", this is the stage before making an offer in contract formation. So the seller puts up an "invitation to treat", the buyer makes an offer to buy and the seller can then accept or reject this offer. A contract is formed when an offer has been made and accepted.

So the seller can say "no I am not selling to you" but after the buyer has made an offer they are in effect bound to buy if the seller accepts the offer. Of course in the case of small ads it wouldn't be worth anyone's time or money to try and pursue these things legally.
 
As has been stated, you can sell to whomever you choose; nor do you have to offer an explanation regarding your decision. :-)

Ive also read the thread being discussed here, and it did strike me as a little harsh when I first read it. But, I dont see the times that the posts were made so couldnt really comment on how long the person was waiting for a response. In principle though, I do agree that if you have an active thread anywhere on the forum, and you receive a noticication that there has been a response, it is only good manners to answer the person.

yes I agree in that thread there was some grey but I felt the tone of the reply was disappointing and so many !!!!!!'s were used :)

However the general gist is on how many threads I have seen lately where a large degree of impatience has been clear.

Also I often forget to watch my own threads so you only get a notification if a quote is used not so much a reply.

You can sell to whoever you want.

I'd happily say 'sorry, I'm not selling to you, in view of the fact that you have behaved like a tool in the following threads.....'

There's no dibs, no 'First offer gets preference', you can even sell to someone for less than an offer made by someone else.... It's Your kit, you can sell it (or not) to whoever you want to.

I would agree with you as well. The seller in the thread should have taken the bad mannered replies as an omen, he probably wouldn't be stuck with a now second hand item if he hadn't traded with that person (if I have read the right thread).
 
yep i'd happily say "sorry i'm not interested in selling to you because you're a well known trouble maker / you have a poor reputation/ you smell or whatever
 
I think there are one or two people on here who think that they have the right to buy low and sell high and are a little unpleasant in their dealings.Personally if I don't like someones attitude i wouldn't sell to them!

If they are buying then selling on the same item on here at a profit (above a market value increase) then report them as it's against our rules...

Selling
  • No "Maybe for sale" threads. The items are either for sale or they are not, and they must be available now.
  • Offering an item for sale? A fixed asking price must be given.
  • Linking to your eBay auction is fine, but only for additional information. Posting on TP? It has to be for sale on TP.
  • No deliberate profiteering (Increase in market value is OK). If you got a bargain here, pass the bargain back! It's the right thing to do.*
  • Do not remove original asking price or details. Add sold to the thread / post instead. (For future reference).
  • Once you've sold something then update the thread and title.

Willing buyer, willing seller, and that's all that really matters; unless either party reneges on an agreement, or there's a dispute about the condition of the goods, delayed delivery or whatever. The mods can intervene in these cases, and it's never going to be possible to eliminate them completely.
 
Agreed its like one of the other oddities that rears its head sometimes, I have seen posts on threads like...

"I know you have been on the board in the last hour so why haven't you responded to my offer, interest withdrawn!!!!!!!!!!!!"

is this basically stalking :-)

I always figure 24 hours to respond on an internet forum is reasonable or is that just me?

Same way I think, not everyone is online all the time, a response within 24 hours seems totally reasonable. Not to mention, the seller might need more than 5 minutes to consider an offer (which the psycho types seem to forget), they are offering less than the seller wants, they should be accorded the time to weigh up the reduced offer.

Not to mention that some people (like me for example) often READ the forum on something like a tablet / phone, but will probably want to make replies on their main computer, purely to save the "autocorrect" mangling their replies - or - if it's going to be a "go to exchanging details" they actually want to have all the details cut/pasted into an offline document on their main computer...
