Someone To Check My Lens In The Dover Area?

Hi all,

Not long purchased a used Canon EF 90-300mm 4.5-5.6 zoom lens
& im not sure if the lens is bad or my technique needs adjusting

If anyone in the area is able to check my lens i would be most grateful.

I shall also be taking some shots using a tripod to see if that makes a
difference.

Here are a couple of pics which have been resized in Cs3 (nothing else
has been altered) & they seem a little soft to me.

Maybe its just me expecting to much as im pretty new to this but my
Fuji S9600 seemed sharper :shrug:

Edit : The lens has a Kenko UV fitted if that makes a difference.

Sorry not in your area, but to me don't look that bad, try giving them a sharpen in photo shop, also do you shot in Raw, if so they will need a sharpen, and then sharpen again after resizing.

the fuji is a prosumer camera and as such images coming from the camera are always sharper than from DSLR's

its best to get the RAW file, because of the 'real color'.

Im guessing as a novice that the cameras processing is different to make
up for user error?

that's correct,the first time I used a 400mm lens I didn't get any sharp shots, I thought it was the lens but it was my incompetence, then somebody told me to stand with my feet slightly apart and hold my breath , the pictures are still rubbish but at least i'm getting some exercise

seriously, get a monopod, they make a big difference at 300mm+

I have this lens too, and to be brutally honest, its not a great lens. You can help yourself though by using a tripod, shooting with a fast shutter whenever possible, and aperture needs to be around f8-11 for sharpest results - thats the sweet spot for this lens. You could also use a remote shutter release (or self timer).

If you have to shoot hand held, try to keep your body underneath the camera, a lot of people shoot with the camera sticking out from their face (hmm its hard to put into words this...)and therefore the centre of balance is off, and also the weight will induce shake. Also, try bracing against something to keep steady. I have often used someones shoulder as an impromtu tripod (you need to have them hold their breath too)

I used to have one of these and it was hard work to get a good sharp shot. I would say the shots you have posted are excellent given the lens you are using. If you can get it up around F8 the IQ improves. If you can continue to get shots like these with this lens when you upgrade (we all do ) getting sharp shots will be a walk in the park by comparison.
